Is this Seo-san in ChungchungNam-do? You must like quiet rural locations far from the cities.

I have one thing to say:
READ THE DAMN CONTRACT.
If that doesn't scare you away, then feel free to fill your boots and sign on.
There are a few here that say they have never had a problem at their SLP.
That may be true BUT:
I can almost 101% guarantee that you will NOT be enrolled in the national pension plan, national medical plan, WILL work more than the next monkey for the same or less money.
Some Key questions to ask?
1) HOW MANY CLASSES per month? (NOT how may class hours).
120 hours can mean up to 160 * 45 minute classes or in the usual case of SLP 80 classes of 90 minutes compared to 88 classes of 40 minutes at a PS and 120 classes of 50 minutes at a normal hakwon. Long time to stand in front of the class.
2) how long are the classes?
3) do they have NHIC medical WITH the booklet? (required by law)
4) are then enrolled in the national pension plan? (required by law)
5) pay: one time and regular?
6) taxes: as per the national tax office or some flat rate (3.3-5%) that is convenient for the school (and illegal)
7) ask about quality of life questions? Shopping, conveniences, etc.
You get the picture.
SLP = Slave Labor Program.

haven't heard good things about slp...they make you do after hours calls to students and if u don't make all the calls your pay is cut...had a friend who used to work for slp...
interviews for jobs in korea are easy..they will probably do most of the talking going over the conditions, the contract, the visa process, the location...once they're done talking they'll ask if u have any questions and when u can start lol...
if i were you, i'd try to talk to a few recruiters or one recruiter that has many jobs, try to do a few interviews and tell them u'll get back to them in the next day or so...do some research about these potential positions...u can ask around here and so on...the point is try to land as many interviews as possible and then have your pick at the job u want. and don't let any recruiter tell u that u must accept the job after the interview...remember it's up to u. and if u really want something and they really want u try to negotiate and see how it goes.

SLP is kinda big.
Browse the FAQs here, the forums, and get a feel for the things that people have to do that they never signed up for (as above, outside hours phone calls to students). Make a list of those things. Then ask if you're going to have to do them.
Second, the person who is taking my job never talked to me. This was a mistake on his part, but I never talked to the previous teacher. This was a mistake on my part. Talk to the previous foreign teacher or any current teachers. Insist on it. |
