I've been on Facebook for ten months now, and don't understand something about it. My friends often post very quotidian messages such as "is bored," or "is going to work now," along with problems they have "the TV isn't working," but they don't seem to answer the responses such messages get. Do they want serious responses, offers to help, commisseration, jokes, random characters, or what? Why do they post those things? Insights, anyone?

Maybe not so much advice (unless solicited IE. "I'm bored, what should I do?") I personally like it when my friends relate to me.

So I say, "I ate blahblahblah for dinner." They say, "Mmm, nom nom nom." or ask a question, "Did you eat out?" "What recipe did you use?" etc.

It's not like having a conversation so much as the random sentence you would say to a coworker as you pass on a way to a class. Just airing thoughts and wanting to feel not alone.

...

It's dumbass psycho babble. No one cares, not even the person posting. One should only make amusing/interesting/alarming/important posts.

Here, I went through the trouble of finding a comic strip to illustrate for you the absurdity of facebook/twitter banality:

most people's Facebook status updates are a mix of self promotion, pity parties, inner monologues that should've stayed that way, and maybe a little social commentary, but a lot depends on your friends. Some of mine post music links or photos a lot, others tell very compressed but funny anecdotes, snippets of poetry, lots of stuff. It's not that unusual for my friends to launch long and silly conversations from status updates.

I'm inclined to disagree with .38 on the banality of twitter though- the difference between "friending someone" on Facebook, and "following someone" on twitter seems huge to me and who you follow makes a massive difference.

I very rarely tweet, but I follow tons of people on that site. News events get reported there more quickly than they do in traditional media, and you get to eavesdrop on authors, musicians and media personalities, without all that annoying social awkwardness. I'm getting insight into a few courses I'll be taking in the fall by following the professors and a few students currently in the program.

pep- the twitter addict.

There is nothing wrong with Twitter/Facebook in of themselves.

But when you're wading through banal posts from your banal friends who think other people care about their banal lives.... it's banal!

If Cormac McCarthy tweeted (or is it twought? Shocked) about his work I would care. If he tweeted about "eating dinner with wife LOL" then it would be a different story.

People gotta quit polluting the internet, other people are trying to use it.

I signed up for Facebook once. It lasted about a week.

I agree totally with you .38 Special - and will simply leave it at that - but not before .....

.... pokes .38 Special

.... starts a snowball fight with .38 Special
.... requests .38 Special join the 'Jedi Club'
.... throws a party for .38 Special for joining the Jedi club
.... attacks .38 Special with a live octopus for leaving the Jedi club

Facebook does have it's uses. Connecting with people you care about and sending messages, organizing social events etc. That's all good. However, telling the world what you had for dinner yesterday, or what you saw on TV last night, does not make for interesting reading. Some people just make themselves look like fools by posting their ill-advised opinions on there. Sometimes it's better to keep your opinions to yourself.
What used to really piss me off with Facebook was other people tagging photos of you on their page. One of my former uni mates put some photos of us when were at a club. Needless to say, we were all looking pretty trashed. I don't want my mother to see that.

People are very different...I agree telling everyone how Korean women like your biceps and arse is too much information...But what can you do to stop them from being smug.

I actually like to see how diverse my friends are, some facebook updates make my day.

You also know there is the privacy setting you can "get rid off" your mommy....or maybe detag yourself, which is easier.

I don't know what it is, but I am one of the minority who doesn't check Facebook on a daily basis. I've never seen why people are so crazy about it. I guess I'm not that interested in people I barely know.

Once again you are completely off base and missing the point "cj1976". It's not about being interested with people you barely know, it's staying connected with people you are truly friends with or loved ones. So once again all you are doing is looking like a bitter person that has no actual connections. Must say I feel bad for you, so instead of whining about FB on Dave's ESL, go make some friends. Boom Roasted.

Ooh that hurts. Being dissed on an internet message board cuts me down to the bone. If you really want to hurt me, you could always turn down my friend request.

Too bad, because I wanted to send you the "Let's be Friends Forever" app. You missed out.
