The numbers of patients suffering from depression, and children with mal-adaptations to society are increasing. Our company analyzed psychiatric outpatients at Shinchon Severance Hospital from 1996 until 2003. The number of psychiatric patients increased from 5,342 to 29,764, up by more than five times. The number of children patients showed a particular increase from 367 to 5,245, up by 14 times.

The Korea Depression and Manic Depression Research Society implemented a survey last October to 1,000 married women in their 20s through 60s and found out that 45 percent of them were suffering from depressive moods with more than minor symptoms.

Is it more of a case of increase in surveys, public awareness, and willingness to now begin solving mental disorders? (Thus, people participating in polls/being more open.)

I wonder, if one measured Korea's growing "acceptance" and awareness of mental conflicts and provisions to solve the problem, if those too have risen 5 X.

When it comes to stats one wonders where the numbers are really coming from just like so many other cases in Korea. Also, cause and effect. eg. how many gays were in Korea in 87 compared to 97- now that TV dramas are featuring such a life-style perhaps we'll think that numbers are increasing as people feel more free to admit to their previous secret.

"Children with mal-adaptations to society"-

10 hours of lessons, 6 days a week, a computer screen for a friend, and being expected to be a winner in all areas of life at the age of 6, will do that to a person.

Actually, my middle school students this winter were at school 13 hours a day, 6 days a week. This is in a small city near Daejon. Damn.

The numbers are probably a lot higher because of misdiagnosis.
For example, last semester one of my students was a psychiatrist.
I asked him at the end of the program if he thought I was crazy.
He said, "No." Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Lies, damn lies, and statistics. The only thing that changes is the way you measure them. More Down Syndrome kids around? I wonder why? maybe it is because they no longer kill them at birth ...

A 15-year-old middle school student has reportedly confessed to killing two elementary school boys who were found dead last month after going missing for 16 days in Puchon, Kyonggi Province. The two boys, 13-year-old Yun Ki-hyon and 12-year-old Lim Young-gyu, were discovered dead at the summit of Mt. Chundok on Jan. 30, 16 days after they went missing.

So, the other day I saw a psychiatrist. He told me I was normal.

I said:
"What kind of a qack are you, I want a second opinion."

So, then he says, well, your also ugly.
