Agreed.

Also, "D" was a great character with lots of potential interesting story lines. I thought it was a waste to kill him off. I didn't make it past season 2 for these reasons.

Yea, The Wire is excellent. It attempts to provide an overview of a whole city; it's got politics, the press, teaching, community service and policing, I'm interested in all of these and found it amazing.

I rate it above the Sopranos. Occasionally the Sopranos feels unrealistic (Tony getting away from the hit by two black guys, running away from the Feds); although McNulty's messing around in the final series is a little unbelievable. If you watch it quickly the Sopranos feels a bit suffocating, always concentrating on Tony, especially with the dreams etc.

I found the main difference was sympathy. I had no sympathy for anyone in The Sopranos (except the chef), even Tony's kids: I don't care what they feel after the final episode. But with the Wire, you're sympathetic towards nearly everyone. Apart from entertainment The Wire actually informs and educates.

I'm just fascinated at how a show billed by numerous critics as the best television show of all time did not win a single Emmy award.

Just goes to show you the awards aren't about the art but politics.

I wouldn't say politics, just conservative and behind the times. Cable TV shows didn't win too many awards until the last couple years.

But yeah, if the Sopranos won emmy awards, the Wire definitely should have.

That realism is what made the show so good though. It didn't sell out on happy endings.

I actually think a lot of people, and this includes the critics were latecomers. I think the show has many more fans now then it did when it was airing.

This is definitely true. I remember it being sandwiched in between a heap of production line, law and Order style shows. I never gave it a chance during its initial run because of this.

Love this show also. I've watched the whole series three times and will do so again this year I think. The show's producer David Simon said they considered doing a sixth season on the influx of Latinos into Baltimore but decided against it because of the lack of their writing staff's knowledge on the subject.

Has anyone seen the miniseries the Corner (also by David Simon)? If you haven't I seriously recommend it. David Simon was also the produer of the miniseries Generation Kill which was also excellent.

Just fired up Generation Kill. Spotted 2 actors common to The Wire, so far. Ziggy. Plus, the big spastic cop. Bull. or something. Also the crack cooker kid from Breaking Bad.

A lot like The Wire but with better acting and better chemistry amongst the actors.

Evil or Very Mad

I didn't like it that much. There are superior movies which cover the same ground in a shorter time. Jarhead, for instance.

Band of Brothers pretty much had the last word on war for TV. I honestly would have preferred to watch B of B for the 8th time than have seen this for the first time.

The Wire kills Generation Kill, at least imo.

I'm guessing he's referring to Generation Kill.

Can I skip a season. I'm watching season 2 now and finding it a bit boring. Do I need to finish 2 before I start season 3?

The seasons are fairly self contained. I think season 2 is universally considered the worst, though I think it gets a bad rap.

I had buddies in the Marines who were involved in the invasion of Iraq and they said Generation Kill was accurate. Started rewatching The Sopranos and was delighted to see the actor who plays Omar in The Wire had a brief cameo in season 3.

Everyone hates the 2nd season the first go-round. I hated the 2nd season as well but after I watched season 3 I decided to give 2 a chance again and it was really worth it.

Give it another chance. I've gotten two people to change their minds after watching season 2 again. Smile
