Hey people.

My colleague arranged for my internet and cable to be set up yesterday, very nice of him and all but something is not right...it is slow...we're talking 2mbps slow.

He set me up with TCN Daegu Broadcasting Co. The modem is a TCN Hi-Net by Scientific Atlanta. It is an internet/cable package but I don't have a tv yet.

While they were setting it up I ran speed tests (through various sites) and registered at nothing above 3mbps. I attempted to download an album through rapidshare and it was slow as well.

Here's the thing, they're assertion is that it is only slow when accessing foreign sites (I was running the speed test from speedtest.net which is not from Korean websites) and the rapid share file also not being Korean specific, and tried to stream some NZ radio station and it failed hard at that. Could this be true? Thanks..

I leech internet off of my neighbors and it's fast as heck. I D/l stuff, surf foreign sites and there are no problems.

Non-Korean sites, even those as close as Japan, tend to be slower than Korean sites. For me, YouTube is slow at both work (20 Mbit) and home (70 Mbit). However, some foreign sites work extremely well and max my connection, like RapidShare.

Of course, Korean-hosted sites go like lightning all the the time.

Try to max your connection by downloading popular, well-seeded torrents and see how fast it will go.

Try getting the technician back. You might live in one of the only areas in Korea without cable internet, but I doubt it. My home connection only gets 30mbs over the WIFI but if you plug it into the router it gets 100mbs. My school connection connects at 500mbs. Holy cow Shocked It's a shame they block torrents. I would probably download rubbish, but popular movies, just for fun, to see what speeds I could get. 4MBS isn't uncommon at home.

Is it wireless? We had internet hooked up, and it's not bad, but the guy who installed it, when we asked about getting wireless, since we have lap tops told us that the wireless would be VERY slow compared to the wired internet.

I was impressed with my school's 1GB/s speed, but not too impressed with having nothing for my laptop baby. It requires an alien card which takes a few weeks to acquire in order to get a dedicated line. It better be a good one. If I were you OP, I might inquire about what service level you are at as there must be 5 different service speed levels available. Surely you have the basic netbook email low bandwidth service. Smoky PC bang will have to be my 2nd hangout after work. Dam, where's the connectivity for my marooned laptop in this wired land? $4 coffees for a WiFi session is tourist fare and this tourist is tapped out from setting a job up and going to it. It's time to get connected to the speed of incoming money connections.
