Korean elementry, middle and highschools return to classes in February for two weeks and then have a vacation for two weeks before the students move up to their new grades. I don't know why the students don't start their new classes right away instead of waiting until the end of February like they do now.

Something to do with graduations. My girlfriend explained it too me the other day and they have to prep work or something???

Look, you know Korean logic, I prefer to just let it wash over me. Smile

I think the Korean school schedule is screwed up too.

From what I have been explained, the Ministry of Education says that they have to have so many hours at school.

Seems there is about a month a year of useless class time just to keep that policy.

For gradution, there's no classes that day anyways, so that really isn't the reason.

I can tell you at the end of each semester is usually a week of NOTHING. Just baby sitting...+ the two weeks in February, it's a month a year the kids do nothing and the teachers do nothing.

Parents don't send their kids to hagwons only to learn what's missing at
public elementary schools. Another reason for sending them to private
institutes is to keep them out of the house for all that time. Unfortunately,
it's we foreign teachers who have to cope with these restless and hyper-
active urchins. Twisted Evil

UncleAlex,

You forgot one key element in your brilliant analysis of why parents send their kids to hakwons....and thats the logic behind the choice.

Really now, kids here are geared towards a university almost from elementary school. Go to this elementatry school so you can go to this high school and on to this great university...if you pass the entrance exams.

These exams are tough and kids need to be prepared so hakwons..a.k.a. cram schools come into play. Hakwons (the better ones) also look good on a kids application to university.

I don't think they necessarily compensate for whats missing. Its more a question of strenghtening whats being taught and of padding up the college application.

Here is what happened at school where I am during those 2 weeks in Feb.

1) 3rd grade students prepared for graduation and then graduated
2) 3rd grade students went to their new high schools and registered and took placeement tests
3) 1st and 2nd graders voted for new student leaders
4) 6th graders from the elementary schools came here to take their placement tests and register
5) clean, clean, clean and more clean
6) teachers came in and finished up on their paperwork from the previous year, not that much teaching going on.

During the vacation (Mon-Tue)

1) New teachers arrived at their new schools (teachers teach at one school for 4 consecutive years before transfering)
2) Principal then assigns positions to the teachers for the new year (ie. 1st Grade Head Teacher, Head Teacher, Displine Teacher, Deptarment Head)
3) School teaching schedules are made

I think that is it. But basically, the 10 tweek of class (8 days including, two Saturdays) is just a transition and preporatory(sic) from one year to the next.

Well most of what you listed my school does at the end of December. The 3rd grade students leave in November and come back in Feb for 1 day. The 2nd grade students go to 3rd year at the end of dec. The 1st year students go to 2nd grade at the end of dec. So basically they sit in their class and self study when there isn't classes.

I am at a highschool...so it is a bit different I guess.

The thing we do get in February is our schedule. Seems that is the last thing done.
