A U.S. luxury cruise ship carrying 710 gay men will call at a Busan port later this month, officials at Busan Port Authority said yesterday.

Carrying 710 homosexual men, the Azamara Quest, a 30,277-ton six-star cruise ship, will arrive in Busan at 7 a.m. on March 22, they said.

A U.S. travel agency reportedly bought all 710 passenger spots on the ship exclusively for gay men for an 11-day travel program that will take them to Shanghai, Busan, Hiroshima, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

After the ship arrives in Busan, passengers are expected to tour the downtown of the country's second largest city or Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province which is famed for an array of cultural and historical tourist attractions.

The ship is set to leave at 5 p.m. for Hiroshima.

The deluxe cruise liner belongs to Azamara Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises. It boasts a variety of on-board amenities, including a casino, a martini bar, a cyber cafe, a buffet restaurant, a cinema and a swimming pool.

The Azamara Quest carries about 710 passengers plus 355 crew members. Due to its small size, it is well-known for being able to call at a variety of the lesser visited ports around the world, officials said.

I was just pulled aside by a coteacher, who was amazed that 710 gay men (!) were on a 6 star cruise and that it'd be in Busan.

It was funny/sad, how shocked she was. I explained that this kind of a trip was a good thing, because the men were with a group that wouldn't hate them, and that they could enjoy a comfortable holiday. Also, I told her that many gay people don't have children (not all. Many), so they have more money to spend in places like Korea.

I've got a few gay family members, and have told this to her, as a way to help her see that it isn't such a terrible thing.

I also told her that in NYC, many teachers are gay, and don't have to hide it. I asked her if she thought it was okay for a gay woman to teach students. She wasn't sure, so I asked her if it was okay for a man to teach students. She understood then.

I then taught her about ancient Greece.

"Is that true?!"

Ah, the power of google...

HAHAHA

She's been to NYC thrice, and has traveled in dozens of countries as a backpacker. She just didn't know a lot about gay culture. I told her about many areas, but focused on NYC, as it's where I'm from. Using Greece as an example of how it was once considered common was to show her that it isn't some new thing.

After this we will surely see either E-2 visa regulations relax, or tourists begin to need to show HIV/TBPE test results to enter Busan.
