I agree

Overrated: Sufjan Stevens (in fact, he sucks a**)

Underrated: The Rakes (why do bands like Bloc Party, the Arctic Monkeys, and even Maximo Park get so much more attention?)

Underrated: Scarface

Overrated: Jay-Z

Overrated: KISS

OVERRATED: The Neptunes (worst music I ever heard)

OVERRATED: Kanye West

I think the question here is: Are there any bands that are neither under nor over rated?

Whether or not Kurt Cobain wanted it that way, Nirvana deserved about as much praise as they got/continue to get. I almost half-jokingly listed them as my "underrated" pick.

At least be specific with your mocking.

I already acknowledged most wouldn't agree with the idea that they weren't overrated by mentioning how calling them "underrated" would have to be a joke. They obviously received and continue to receive ridiculous amounts of fan worship. This doesn't change the fact that Cobain was ridiculously talented as a songwriter and performer. He had what the Ween brothers have referred to as the "brown" sound. It's where some amazing reverse virtuosic glory emerges out of an all too human pile of disoriented distortion and worn in personality taking precedence over technicality.

But yeah, haha-- Nirvana's all mainstream and nobody should like them because other people like them and it isn't cool to like what other people like. I get it. I was in middle school once too.

EDIT-- Never mind on that last paragraph...:

Yeah, pretty much.

... seeing as how you picked the most mainstream, overrated choice possible for greatest album. It's not even one of the better Floyd albums really. Never understood the rationale behind everyone treating it like a religious experience.

I tend to think in terms of albums and not bands, and my feeling is the opposite. I wish radio stations played Dark Side of the Moon more and freaking The Wall less. I am so, so sick of the latter album. And I can be odd. I like Nirvana but loathe "Teen spirit."

Underrated (just my opinion, remember?)
Kraftwerk
Genesis (pre 1980s)
Cowboy Junkies
Gypsy Kings
Sass Jordan
Judas Priest

Overrated
Aerosmith
Bon Jovi
Bob Dylan
70s Rock anthems over six minutes
The Doors
Red Hot Chili Peppers

I will shamelessly plug some pages I've written on this:

I'm not a fan of The Wall either (although the movie's neat). Wish You Were Here's where it's at as far as they go.

Dark Side of the Moon just seems kind of bland to me, although Money is an actively annoying track for me.

I think that's a pretty common sentiment actually. I don't like that song either.

Nirvana were way overrated. Not saying they weren't a good band, but they were a triumph of marketing. Some suits knew just how to strike at the heart of 15 year old girls.
Are Muse underrated? They used to be compared a lot to Radiohead, but I think they've come on strong and developed their own sound.
