Any favourite easy activities you guys like to do at the very beginning or end of your class for elementary school?

I'm a big fan of Simon says and "Guess what animal I am thinking"... haha I know it's ridiculous but if you give a couple clues the young ones really like to guess.

Anything special you guys use that can excite the kids?

How about teaching them the difference between "General Discussion" and "Job Related"? Rolling Eyes

I like to do what I call the "Left-Right" game to get them listening. The students all stand up with their arms to the side. I call out left or right and the students must raise their arms 90 degrees. If I call out left and students raise their right arms, they're out and vice versa. I play until one student is left standing.

Wow. You're all so lucky to have a workplace where the concept of 'extra time' exists. Do your students not have study goals or something? Must be talking about hagwon.

In my school, we barely find time for breaks because the kids are way too active into the lesson. Somebody needs some new curriculum/teachers.

EDIT: I guess this was totally rude of me. My apologies to OP and the moderators. What I meant to say was that I although I am sure cases are all different for each teacher, most of the teachers in the industry have left over time because they're just lazy, unorganized, unmotivated, or have no control of their students. As long as you're not denying that, I don't mind being called named for being so direct. ^^

Love your replies and know where you are coming from ..... but I'm more like the King of Kensington (if you get the comparison - you will understand).

I have nothing special but to share my mind. Homeless mind. Internet allows it to wander and get drunk. Knowledge, involvement in the flow and process of teaching - can be like the best Petron.

But on topic.

1) There are NO timekillers. Everything counts! What we call time killers is actually when THE MOST learning takes place. When the brain relaxes and students can actually BE and not be on automatic.

2) Search Search Search for the TEACHABLE MOMENT.
I just did a whole lecture on "teachable moments" and was so surprised that so many teachers have had so few. When I'm teaching, the opportunity comes up every lesson!!!! It isn't about reality but what you SEE. See what is important to the learners and you will have so many teachable moments. the curriculum will come alive and be real and something that CHANGES students. Our job isn't just between the lines but in rewriting the lines (in the jargon it is called - praxis). Be committed, make change.

3) Warm ups are essential. I'm thankful for Harmer's ESA Engage them! Get their attention and the best way is through chit chat. Talk about their lives and interests. How many teachers have sent out a student information sheet in Korean????? Do it. Get to know them, even in "gross" Connect is the same as communicate, the poet knows.

My fav. warm up is What's the first word you think of when I say......

It is good for all levels and uses student's present knowledge. It focuses on practicing on Output and what they already know.

Go around the class asking and then replying with to their answer.

ie.

Teacher. What's the first word you think of when I say.... snow?
S: cold
Teacher: skiing
Next student: falling
Teacher: leg
etc.....

Then in groups of 3 - students do "First Word War" .
Do the same, going in a circle. BUT, if one student hesitates 3-5 seconds, the others can knock and call, "point!"

Works like a charm and most importantly, recylces content and vocabulary. Try it with a sentence structure also.

Teacher: I like to eat pizza
S: I like to eat bulgogi after pizza
Teacher: I like to eat salad after bulgogi
S: I like to eat chicken after salad.
etc .....

Lots going on there.

As to timekillers. There are none. The best time killer is authentic communication. Students telling the teacher something meaningful and where there is a negotiation of meaning (dialogue) that is real and true.

Most of teaching is really just training the mouth to speak what is in the heart.

Is teacher a drunk?

While you are hung over in the early morning, do different motions to see if the students understand liver failure. Sometimes I pee blood in the corner and ask "Is teacher a drunk?" They all scream, YEEESSSSSS.

Other times I have the students watch me read from the Old Testament for a few minutes. Then I ask, "Is teacher drunk?" They all scream, NOOOOOOOO
