I'll give you my bank account info and I'll be more than happy to take your money from you, to ease your burden on the unhappiness it is causing you. You don't want to? Why not? I thought money wasn't important?
If you have recognition, family, friends, and your health then please, by all means, send me your money. You don't need it anymore because you are successful. No need to be burdened by your cash. Put your money where your mouth is. (Pun intended) |
Doesn't care about money != thinks giving it to pkang0202 would be a better idea.
But as for giving away one's money, here's an example. I certainly wouldn't do that but clearly that guy was not content with the riches he had.
Back to the op: the other day we were watching a documentary on an Australian guy that spent a few months living in a temple. Shaved head, get up at 4 am, clean floors and exercise by crawling up and down stairs with the other monks, the whole deal. Do an experience like that and everyone back home will be all ears to hear about it. My girlfriend's reaction? "His poor mom, does she know he's living such a hard life? He can't even relax and eat meat!" |

You are clearly a poor reader. I think I was pretty clear in my post that while money is not UNIMPORTANT, it is just not THE GREATEST MEASURE OF SUCCESS. I even said that if a million dollars fell out of the sky, that sure, I'd take it, but that there are other things that would be more important to me than that million dollars.
Also, just having a million doesn't necessarily make you a success. Tell me, pkang, if someone has millions of dollars, but is a horrible human being, would you call them a success? I wouldn't. This is about as cliche as your offer to take people's money, but tell me; is Kim JeongIl a success in your eyes? He has money and power. If that is more important than anything else, than surely you must look up to his example? |

To some degree but in fact many Koreans have gone above and beyond for me...and most often I have found them to be more generous and nice than the average westerner. |

Whatever on my deathbed keeps me from crying and saying "My whole life has been for nothing."
That includes having had a positive affect on many people's lives (especially young people), having done things in a pioneering way at all costs, and in having been around the block enough to know how many windows are open and closed. Money is just a byproduct of those. |

I'm sorry, I don't recall mentioning you specifically. I said, "those of you who don't care about money".
You, obviously, care about money so you are not part of the group I was addressing. Maybe it is you who is the poor reader? |

No surprises there. I did notice that it was an East Asian thing which is certainly more pronounced amongst the older generation.
My girl's classes used to get on the topic of relationships when I had them free talking at the end of class. I defined and asked them to make an order of importance list between personality, looks and money. For the most part, I got "money, then looks and then personality" as an answer.
Where most Westerners would say "personality, then looks and then money" (sometimes for no other reason than to be politically correct) most Koreans will unabashedly tell you that money is the most important motivator in any relationship destined to end in marriage. It certainly explains the outrageous amount of infidelity in East Asian countries: if you want love, get a boyfriend/girlfriend who is not your husband/wife.
Of course it isn't always the case and everyone is different but the overall opinion of it here is the opposite to what it is in the West.
I think this belief is on the decline in Japan and Korea though as wars, famine and authoritarianism are fading from public memory. |
DEFINITELY!! My Korean coworker has blatantly told me time and time again that she will keep dating different guys until she finds a really rich one and that none of the guys she's dated are "rich enough." AND she tells me every Monday how much each guy spent on her during their date. So, if one poor 'schmo only spent $200 on her and another one spent $400...well, the poor little $200 guy is getting kicked to the curb. Nice, eh?? |

She's just obeying her naturally-selected instincts before her looks plunge within a few short years. |

It's a strategy that's prone to backfire as many of these rich guys are players who find it quite difficult to adapt to a monogamous lifestyle and in fact, see little reason to do so. If the lucky girl does end up landing one of these guys, she shouldn't be too surprised at his philandering ways.l |

I was on one of those religion threads which the mod's have since eliminated.
One of the participants kept telling the rest of us that we were materialists.
I responded that he must be receiving a salary comparable to ours, since most of us were foreign English teachers in Korea.
So how was he any less materialistic than us?
Did he donate more of his salary to worthy causes, or what?
He responded that he was defining "materialistic" to mean explaining natural phenomena in scientific terms, without calling for a Divine agent. |

He could possibly argue that for someone who is working privates, demanding pay raises, etc. Or simply for taking 1 job over another b/c of better pay.
Religious people need to make money too, but if that person practices what he preaches, he would only want enough money to live moderately.
