Anyone done Tahiti? I have been dying to go since reading Mutiny on the Bounty. I was just interested in any thoughts on getting there ect. Seems like it can be an expensive proposition? Any thoughts?

Getting there - buy a sailboat.... that was only 1/2 tongue in cheek.
It is EXPENSIVE to get to from here and will take 2-3 hops on a good day (4-5 on a bad one).
If you want to do any more than just the city itself... buy a yacht.

What do you want to do in Tahiti? My friends did Bora Bora and loved it, but everyone there said to just go to Fiji because its equally as pretty and about 1/2 the price.

I went there on vacation about 10 years ago. I stayed in Papeete and just traveled around the main island (didn't go to Bora-bora etc.) I loved the French aspect of that part of Polynesia, but it is FREAKISHLY expensive. There is a subsidy on bread and beer, but you will pay top dollar for anything else. Also, the Gaugin museum is very disappointing. the only place I liked enough to go back to was the beach at Point Venus, but as far as beaches go (think tropical paradise) it was nothing to write home about. I didn't find Tahiti that friendly, I met a few local people (one was a descendent of captain Cook), but overall if you want to experience French culture in the Pacific I would recomment New Caledonia over Tahiti anyday.

Please define 'freakishly expensive'. Are we talking $15 a meal? $20?
It is about as remote of a location in the world as possible. I guessed things wouldn't be cheap. But I would love to get there some day.

FREAKISHLY expensive - like Tokyo prices (a $20 meal would be cheap). It is out of the way, but it is en-route to Auckland if you travel Air France

I read some sites about it, and it said $20-30 a meal per person, with drinks. That's low. Street stalls or whatever will be less.
I bet hotels start at $150-200 a night as well.
Fiji sounds like a way better deal. I'd love to do a South pacific tour. Fiji, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Tahiti, Samoa, etc. |
