Does anyone know what our fellow Korean teachers (public school co-teacher or dude in the classroom nextdoor in your hagwon) are earning?
I imagine it would be less...not comparative net income, just straight up salary. |

Hagwon teachers usually earn less. PS teachers earn way more than us. |

The average wage for a non-specialized K-teacher in a hakwon is between 1.2 and 1.6 million per month.
Specialized hakwon teachers can make upwards of 5+ mil per month.
A hakwon (E2) NET fresh out of college can expect 2.0-2.3 depending on the school and number of classes.
An experienced (E2) NET can make up to ~2.6 + benefits in a hakwon.
In a public school the new teacher who just started and is fresh out of university will make about 1.2 - 1.5 mil per month + benefits.
The old guy down the hall who is just a few years from retirement will make ~5 mil per month.
A VP starts at 4 mil and goes up depending on the size of the school.
A Principal starts at 5 mil and can make up to 8 mil again depending on the size of the school and years of service.
A NET will start at 1.8 mil (fresh out of Uni with no TESOL or experience).
They top out at ~3 mil (plus overtime and benefits).
Add up the perks and it can top out at ~5 million)
(perks like 250k per week for extra classes, 6-8 weeks paid holiday annually, housing, airfare, pension, severance, etc.)

Thanks Senior and ttompatz for the comprehensive reply, so the chap next door in my hakwon with seemingly way more responsibility and is working his butt off 6 days a week is earning 1million won a month less than me?! Geez I wonder if there is some hidden jealousy among some of my other co-workers....Oh not to mention I live in a way nicer apartment which I don't pay for and my boss had my new 32inch tv delivered to my office. So wish he didn't do that |

I'm curious about something too. I'm curious why you don't put the subject of your post in the place where it says "Subject" at the top of the post form. You could have easily fit "How much do our co-teachers make?" into there. |

In addition to what ttompatz said. In the public schools there are also quite a few teachers that are under contract (up to a max of 3 years at one school). After 3 years they are either let go are hired full-time. They are making around the 2 million mark. I think the number for fresh teachers is kind of low, I was chumy with one a couple years ago and he was making 1.8.
As for the Principals and VP's I think it's dependent on time served. Size of school has no consideration for the person's pay. |

OP - you aren't setting up a complaint about how much these totally different people are to us, are you? Remember, they probably don't get housing either... |

Ya, the size of school DOES make a difference in the pay and pension benefits.
I went through 3 principals at our school in 3 years during my tenure there.
As they were due to retire they were moved to the BIG elementary school in town (3000+ students compared to our 1000) for their last year.
It was carefully explained to me that the reason was the pension was based on the last years pay and the bigger the school the bigger the salary (+ they get more envelopes at retirement) and the better the pension.
Those without "friends" didn't get this opportunity.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here...
If you're suggesting that I am complaining about the difference in salary then no certainly not - I am however interested to know how they actually feel about it. I mean it is the first time I have been in a profession where someone is unjustifiably getting paid more than others...and that person is me. |
