Do you think it's chintzy for a school/agency not to supply an AC or a fan for your apartment? |

We didn't have either at our last two jobs....I suppose you have to take it into consideration with the other benefits. |

It's standard for it not to be stipulated, but it's almost an unwritten clause, in my opinion. If I ended up in a place without AC, I would just get one installed. They only cost about 500,000. And being uncomfortable all summer is worth more than that to me. |

Perhaps they would if you were a better teacher and or stood up for all lessons.
YOu ride yourself on not doing the best you possibly can, yet you always want to ask questions like this.
Yeah sometimes employers don't want to do all that they can either. |

chintzy? well, it's silly for a teacher not to insist on it.
An air conditioner has always been a PRECONDITION to my being hired and both longterm hagwon jobs I've had here have started with the director begrudgedly agreeing to install a/c and in both cases I reminded them the first day I was hired and got a date commitment and reminded them of it the week before that date came, in both cases they thereafter did it. Those were the best two jobs I've had here, 3 years each, but the air conditioner would not have happened if I hadn't insisted and was clear and firm but gentle and "needs" based in my language rather than pushy and angrily handling it.
One has to choose for oneself where to draw the line. Pick and choose your battles, so to speak, but of course don't fight in any sense, if it's important then tactfully insist on it as a basic need, with a smile.
(Of course, the op of this thread likes to sit in class and even fall asleep, so who's being 'chintzy' is an open question in that particular teacher's case.) |

Because things like this are not offered I act accordingly...falling asleep in class....not wanting to stand up.....wasting time....do meaningless repetitions while insisting to some that it is indeed "teaching"..used to hit on the uni chicks that I taught etc etc - Because it is such a mess here at least it gives me an excuse to just totally goof off. |

Yes...yes.. That's totally a reason to flush your sense of professional responsibility down the toilet. Yes, there's no reason to have any personal pride in your work. Oh dear god I have to get out of here. |

Chilgok.....
As much as we disagreed on the thread about debts to old bosses, you and I are in total agreement on this issue.

That's great. Punish the students because you and the boss disagree. This is a big why reason expat teachers are being viewed less and less favorably here. |

I reckon we are. "Oh, I had professional responsibility, but then when I came to KOREA I didn't need it anymore..." Oh cry me a river and drown in it. Korea isn't some kind of magic place that changes your soul and makes you above it all. It isn't some hell that holds your heart for ransom. It's a job. If you don't like it, find another one, or simply admit that you don't have the skill necessary to do so.
I don't love it. I'm leaving it. I am neither proud of that nor do I feel like a failure. It was a good time. And now it's time to go.
But for real, Korea can't compromise you professionally. Only you can do that, and it seems like the OP is doing that. It's too bad for her. And she wants to blame Korea for her utter and complete failure at life, fine. It's not Korea's fault. You don't even register on the radar with these people. They'll have you out the door in 10 days and forget you forever in the next 5.
If you want to compromise yourself, go ahead. Don't expect any of the *good* teachers on this board to love all over you for it.

You've been through 10 years in Asia and you don't know how to fix a toilet? My dad didn't let me get past 10 years *old* without knowing that. |
