It is the missus' birthday in a couple of weeks and I wanted to get her a good quality cake , i.e. not the Korean-style rubbish in Paris Baguette etc, but something better than the Dunkin Doughnuts cakes.

Does anyone know any independant cake shops or if any of the department stores have decent cakes (the ones in Seoul do)?

A few choices that I know of:

1. Downtown: Die Torte.
New restaurant across the street from Holy Grill. I saw some nice torts, and cakes in their display case.

2. Debec Plaza Dept. Store.
In the basement, there is a bakery with decent cakes.

3. Beomeo Dong: Sweet Coffee:
This place is a coffee shop that specializes in baking. They ahve a baking school on the premises and often have great looking cakes in store.

Directions:
From Debec Plaza Department Store, go East almost to the end of the street. It's not walking distance. It could take 30minutes to walk.
Sweet Coffee is n the left, 1 block from the end of the street.

The 5 star Hotel Inter Burgo has it's own bakery called Montblanc.
Here's the description from their website.

Our chefs bake fresh bread, rolls, croissants and a large variety of cakes every day. Our "Chocolatier" prepares the very delicious Inter-Burgo Chocolates made from best quality ingredients.

I live out by the Gaksan stop and there is a small street with like four or five bakeries on it, not including the Paris Baguette.

If you take the subway get out going right, then right up the stairs. Go left out the exit down the street and under the bridge. When you get to the end of the street at a big intersection, go left. I bit down the way is the area. If you see some sort of playground and the big apartments you've gone too far.

On the right side of the street I always see these very nice looking cakes.

It's a bit of a trek coming out to Gaksan but I just thought I'd share.

Good luck!
