Ever asked a person what music they like and their response is "I dunno, whatever is in the charts", it's people like that who I think influence who are underrated and overrated, people who have no passion in life, people I don't want to know.

While someones musical taste alone doesn't completely give away their deeper character, it does give hints. I won't judge a person on that alone, but the method with which they enjoy music leads me to a few observations.

For example, a guy who only listens to whatever is on top 40 radio no matter how girly it sounds, probably also loves Axe body spray because it 'smells bomb'. He wears the same button-up and gelled hair to the club as every other chump and they all stand around holding their beers up at their stomachs like shields.

Meanwhile, there's a good chance that a guy who only listens to indie bands until they get popular wears dorky glasses, ironic t-shirts and would let a guy slap him in the face but try to sue later for physical injury and PTSD. If he took the quiz on "Stuff White People Like", he'd get 90% or more.

A guy who only listens to the most evil deathmetal and thinks that Pantera isn't heavy enough might be a guy who is angry and disconnected from the world. He's too much of a wimp to express it outwardly but he thinks that all this evil metal makes him scary and tough.

I see younger guys who get into classic rock almost expecting a medal for liking it. Do you think some girl's going to go up and blow you because you have the balls to wear your 'Ride the Lightning' shirt everywhere?

In other words, some people often use music as a substitute for personality. Too many people define themselves by the music that they're into and use it to fill some void.

On the other hand, if someone shows no personal taste in music and just runs with the crowd, that's often indicative of a similar void that they just fill in a different way- following. The exception is with girls. Most girls I know love the top 40 (maybe because it's designed mostly for girls) and I find girls who are music snobs to be even more insufferable than male music snobs. It's like they try harder because they think it's empowering. Anyone who likes Ke$ha loses points with me though. She's the latest and foulest ball of feces to pop out of Lucifer's anus, for those who don't know.

With me, music is mostly just there to enjoy, but if I don't like the image of the band then I stay away from it. Fall-out Boy could go and record the next Stairway to Heaven and I'd think it sucked because they're a bunch of pansies and goofs in my opinon. Pharrell Williams could make an actual good beat for once and I still wouldn't like it.

Back to the theme of the thread:

Overrated- Late '60's hippie music

Underrated- Early '60's

The Beatles would always come out winners in any UK poll on the best band of all time. I was wondering which American band would always win a similar poll in the US?

After Michael Jackson's death, CNN did a poll about who is the best musical artist of all time: Jackson, the Beatles or Elvis. Jackson won in a landslide.

That said, I think if you polled Americans about American musical artists, Elvis and Michael Jackson would come up about as consistantly as the Beatles would in the UK.

While, of course, there have been great American bands and great British solo artists, for the most part, America puts out a lot more super-successful solo artists and Britain puts out a lot more bands and groups than America does. Think about that one.

In terms of records sold, you might have to put Mariah Carey up there with Jackson and Elvis.

Here is another way-over-rated artist: Britney Spears. She isn't even in the same leauge with Madonna.
