Hey guys,
How important is physical appearance in regards to GEPIK and EPIK placement?
I have read a couple times that those who are the most blessed in that department get the best locations (which is subjective anyway)
true? false? in-between? |

Somewhere in between I guess.
I am an ugly old fart and I got a great school with a nice officetel in Seohyun-dong.

| I'd agree with tom. I'm no great shakes in the looks department, but I got a really good school after looking for a while, and this is my first year here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but looks are far more important in hagwons than in public schools; what matters in the latter is your qualifications and experience. |

| yes I agree with the experienced teachers above. Many recruiters recommended PS rather than hagwon positions for me since I am a non-Caucasian male. But if you are a decent teacher, friendly (have good energy), persistent, and can fit in Korean culture than everything should be fine. They also are looking at more accents nowadays, with the North American accent preferred, which as a yank I believe to be bollocks btw;). |

The old, the fat, the ulgy tend to get placed in rural areas. Just my observation (and my personal experience).
Lots of very young and handsome/beautiful teachers in Seoul and Busan. |

Both of which are dirty and polluted (more so that outside of the city).
I like being in the "burbs". The pay and perks are better too.
+1 more week paid holiday, + 100k won more in the monthly salary, + bigger apartment and smaller classes.

Not everyone in the 'burbs' is as lucky. I'm teach out in rural rice-ville, but I've a 30 min commute out on the school bus - and then, hopefully, a ride back with a staff member. Failing that, a local bus (but no once can tell me where to catch it). All up, it's a 7.15am - 5.30-5.45pm day.
I have a tiny room in a nearby city (13 feet by 12 feet). I have to wait until 25th to see if the local POE is going to be clever with my 'rural' allowance.
My idea of heaven - it aint! |

| Just wondering... don't the PS only see your face when you submit a photo to your recruiter and they send it to the schools? |

Not sure about that, but you are only allocated your EPIK school on the last day of orientation. This could be when they assign teachers to city versus rural versus island etc - re your looks. Especially as Koreans don't trust face photos (many photoshop their application photos). Who really knows? |
