I think the reason they stay in it is because once you start, there isn't much of *beep* else you can do. It's like being a porn star. Once you pop you can't stop!

One Thai woman once told me that the reason there are so many women in the trade in Thailand and other South East Asian countries is a confluence of their love of sex and the influence of the climate. When she told me this, I thought she was trying to tell me something I wanted to hear, which is the Thai way, but it's an interesting theory anyways. Many Thai women have refined interesting techniques to mollify horny customers whom the girls don't find attractive and still get them to pay up. It's a fascinating piece of ethnosexual detail that deserves some serious research. I've actually walked into brothels, paid the price of admission and just talked to the girls out of sheer curiosity. Yes, I can speak the lingo, but many could also speak English quite well. The stories are both heartbreaking and BS, and it requires a fine sense of the ridiculous to distinguish between the two.

she should've also mentioned the lack of religious brainwashing and moralist flogging.

High end callgirls are not at all comparable to women living in poverty and having sex with creepers so they don't starve.

You're right. The 'take care of your parents/family' is the highest virtue in Thai society. That's why Thais turn a blind eye to the widespread prostitution that is structured throughout their society/culture. Thais, especially Issan Thais, very prostitution as an unspoken of way of supporting families and a way to lift them out of socialised inequality and povery.

In Thailand, it becomes meaningless to distinquish between a first wife, a second wife, a rent-a-wife, a rent-a-girlfriend- a pay-by-the-year/week/hour 'girlfriend' - when the result is the same (in Thai eyes). That is, she is supporting her family- by the only means possible to her.

But, she is still being coersed into a life of prostitution and serving men (husbands/boyfriends/patrons/tricks - whatever). Most of the rural poor girls (eg, Issan), have been raised to 'take care' of their family, and subtly, or not subtly, they're forced into prostitution.

I've had heartbreaking instances, where young girls, who've just left high school, have approached me privately, and asked me to 'take care' of them (and they weren't prostitutes, yet). I've always refused these girls - and told them it isn't possible for me to live with them and support them - and I know they're trying very hard not to work bar and become a prostitute - but their difference in age and education means they can't be my partner - rent-a-wife- patron ................... etc. So I, have also been responsible for unwittingly pushing these girls to sell themselves. I guess there's no right answer to this question - not in Thailand, anyway.

Yeah, but if you were a multi-millionaire would you not at least consider having them as bikini clad live-in maidens in your home? Not even for sexual purposes, but just to clean your home, cook, and give you massages and such?

I suppose I should just take your word for it?

isn't Angeles, on what used to be an old US airbase?
wouldn't that make for a more logical explanation of such barbed wire, if in fact exists?

and what you say about BKK bargirls is nonsense. They regularly go back home to buy a new water buffalo or give their gambling alkie father some money for drinking and gambling. Then they look for another idiot farang to send them money (usually for mother in hospital or a variant of such)

If you're truly alarmed by potential kidnappings and beating and other forms of coercion you'll be better served by visiting all the Thai brothels for purely domestic consumption.

In the case of Angeles City. The barbed wire fence surrounds the city and has nothing to do with The Clark airbase. It's meant to keep the ladies from escaping . They are sex slaves working for the local Go Go bars.
Most of the ladies were kidnapped from nearby islands.

In Pattaya the kidney trade is closly tied to the Sex industry. While the Farang is sleeping they cut out his kidney and sell it to some rich people who need a new kidney. If the farang is lucky he is dumped at a hospital. If unlucky his dead body is dropped into the harbour.

At least 90% of the ladies are HIV positive. Particularly on Walking street.

this very short article about ex call girl Natalia's book should effectively shatter the very oft used and tired arguments on the part of some moralists on this forum about how it's never a woman's choice to enter or stay in the world of prostitution.

Well it would...if the example of ONE person (which for all we know could be fictitious) meant anything.

Hard to dispute anything oldfarang said.

I have an older friend, a very well off expat who became very fond of a certain bargirl. He eventually gave her money to start her own business, it was her dream. She wanted to start a pig farm back home in Isaan.

He completely funded the venture and tried his best to teach her basic business principles and tried hard to make her aware of the typical Thai pitfalls in such ventures.

Needless to say, it didn't work. There is always the drunk father or uncle who gambles tons of it away..... the inability to deal with a chunk of money all at once. Etc. So it wound up being a failure (which is typical in such cases probably 90%+ of the time). Of course he wouldn't fund it again.

It's indeed not a pretty state of affairs. However, I think it does beat being bent over in the rice paddy for 1o hours a day in the never ending sun. At least for many, it's a choice they make willingly and if they're very lucky they get a farang benefector, or bf, or even a husband.

that's an awful lot of urban myths put together in one paragraph.
I feel fairly confident calling BS on every single one of them

I hadn't heard about the kidney trade. I suspect this is urban folklore. What does happen though, is Thai girls are regularly kidnapped/duped into being sex slaves in ME or other Asian/European countries. The girls are aware of this and wise ones are very cautious (they always ring their minder when they leave to go with a farang to his hotel).

Satistics say that there are 5,000 registered HIV positive Thais in PATTAYA alone. Aids is the single biggest cause of death for Thais under 50 years old. But saying all the girls on Walking St have aids, I wouldn't have thought so. However, most have claumidia, gonoreha, herpes and the pox virus. The yellow skin (and constant sleepyness) of some shows that some also have hepatitus.

I know of several old guys who are retired in Pattaya and stiill pretty much pay for it and fairly often. Unless they've learned the fine art of distinguishing between the healthy and the non healthy, they'd have been dead or constantly at the doctor's a long time ago. (because I know one of them doesn't use rubbers for e.g.)

But I'd generally agree that I'd be personally careful fornicating with most of the girls in Pattaya with someone ELSE'e *beep*.

You're not wrong there, mate. Lovely as they are, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. And while I don't - I don't mind the eye candy.
