| I'm going through a recruiter and it looks like I might get hired at a school called Oregon. I know they have branches all over Korea, but I'll be working at the one in Daegu. If anyone could give me a review of that place I would appreciate it (if not the Daegu branch, then the school as a whole). |

Years ago I worked for the one in Daegu. Full name is Oregon Language Institute.
They take a deposit that�s not mentioned in the contract. First month salary is debited with the full amount. Not that I have a problem with deposits, since some teachers leave their apartment in a mess or leave some kind of debt.
However, the only way to wrest the deposit back at the end of the contract is to remain in or return to Korea, or you can kiss it goodbye.
The owner, Mrs. Lee thinks she�s a pillar of Korean high society but doesn�t see that patent dishonesty is inconsistent with that outlook.
Getting paid for overtime is a challenge, no aircon in apartment and TV must be rented from the school.
Tax is 5% versus the correct rate of about 2%. You will also pay half of medical, however you will never receive any kind of booklet or brochure. That�s because Mrs. Lee pockets the money and bribes the medical people. So when or rather if you ever have a claim then you are backdated to being a recent arrival. She knows all the tricks.
No pension��. as a matter of course.
This is a hakwon for the noob. |

Come to think of it Wes, you're right. We're talking 2001 or so in my case.
My earlier post could hardly be relevant anymore, just an offchance. |

I'm on my second. Limiting myself to 5.

| Yeah, well you don't want to "hope." Best to talk to a teacher that was there. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for a year of having to deal with all kinds of garbage. After hearing about if from one of the people responding, I would definitely research it more. |

Well, I've been in and out. My years in Korea have been five, which is about the max the average person can take in my view. Actually, make that 4.
You need a second wind to do the 5th one.
As far as Oregon goes, I have a feeling that it's still in the same hands.
At least an evens chance. Should be easy for the OP to find out.
Sounds like he/she is committed already.
By the way, Oregon had been blacklisted before I worked there, though I was unaware of it at the time. We were all noobs once!! |
