Obstacle 1: the crossing guard/ lollipop lady. She ignores koreans crossing the street without her say-so but when I do it she gives me dead eyes and has been known to shout Stop. I tend to wait for her signal but often she takes too long when there are absolutely no cars coming.

Obstacle 2 The bridge. In the mornings this always hosts a traffic jam. You can be sitting in traffic for about 15 minutes on a bad day.

Obstacle 3 The turn. The light for right turn blinks for about a split second. If you miss it, you will be stuck waiting for pedestrians to cross and all the other lanes to go for about 5 minutes. Often someone blocks your way right at the crucial moment.

Obstacle 4 intersection. This is often blocked by an overflow of late traffic trying to tag itself onto the flow that has gone before, so it may take several tries to cross succesfully. That is if it has not been blocked by the usual truck parked on the double yellow. (Which nothing is ever done about).

Journey time on a good day: 10 minutes.
Journey time on a bad day: 35 minutes.

Crashing bike into rice fields while admiring sun rising over, or mist settling before, yonder hills. Also, mud splattered upon footwear and pants while traveling fast through puddles on dirt roads. The wind blows hard off the water and makes for a vigorous ride. The nose water can run freely in the wintertime and make for prominent crusties upon arrival.

I will play with you Nautilus!

I tend to take the subway to work even though it's about a 10 minute walk to the station, only two stops up the line and another 10 minute to the school from the station. Yes, there is a bus that goes from pretty much in front of my apartment right to the school.

Usually, this bus can make the run in 10-15 minutes, but in the morning, it takes 30-40 minutes.

The main obstacle, and quite annoying, is the turn onto the busy road right in front of the school. The bus turns onto the main road that has 4 or so roads feeding into it. It takes the bus 10 minutes just to move up 80 or so meters. Of course, everyone on the bus wants to get out and walk, but they never let us. Sometimes, it literally takes 3-4 light changes just to move up to the stop. It's frustrating because you're so close...

Fun times indeed,
Ryan

I can only infer that the OP is talking about driving, since he's speaking about being blocked by trucks and pedestrians. It seems that those kinds of obstacles wouldn't hinder anyone on food unless they're 400 feet wide.

Interesting. I didn't notice it but OP mentions crossing the street (cars don't cross streets, they go through intersections) at one point and then sitting in traffic at another (pedestrians don't sit in traffic). Perhaps OP's commute involves both walking and driving. I don't know. Let's ask the OP. OP?

Yeah, I had to use an umbrella. Was windy too.

There you go. Aerodynamics reduced, wind resistance increased=obstacle. It took a while but we finally got an answer. OP will be so happy (Perhaps, though, OP will want to see some numbers).
