Does everyone out there have to do open classes where all the Korean teachers and parents are there? I found out that no Korean teachers have to do this, it's just for the English class..........

I'm just wondering because I've gotta do 3 open classes this semester and its a real pain the ass!

3 seems a little over the top. Though, everyone has to do an evaluation class, so don't sweat it too much. Just wear your best suit that day. If they don't like you, then your job performance isn't going to change their minds.

We're talking about public schools?

3 isn't the norm. 1 per calendar year is normal. I've never heard of parents showing up, but teachers from other schools might, and some of the head honchos from the education office might.

Also, Korean teachers do these too, but I think it's like once every 3 or 5 years. They are open to other teachers attending but rarely do teachers from other schools do, unless it's for something special.

Are you a newbie? If so, you might have to prove your worth to a bunch of parents who probably can't speak English anyways. They are more concerned with how active their child is in class.
You might get the P and VP, and if you're very unlucky, some Education Inspectors. I think 3-4 for the year is the norn if you're new.

I know the Korean teachers have to do more open classes from now on as part of a teacher improvement policy. I'm not the focus in these open classes, I just have to play a cameo role and then just assist. I've done my share of open classes, I really hate them, it's more of a performance than a class.

So true. Make sure you rehearse the class with students and wear something nice. Oh, and smile, smile, smile. Laughing

I do 3 big ones every year. One for the pple from the office of education in my town, one for other English teachers in my town, and one for parents and teachers at my school.

Then, i have the little ones which I do every month for any teachers at my school. Pretty much just the principal, vice principal and the headteacher comes to these.

I heard the previous teacher had 6 open classes per semester, which could be BS................

This is my first PS elementary school,so it may be because of that.......I did one open class already last semester, which went quite well, but it's just a bit stressful......... And I gotta do 3 this semester and 1 more nexd semester....So, 5 in a year.............

I know teachers who don't have to do them at all.............I guess my director is just being sadistic!

I am at a PS middle school. I was told at the beginning of the semester that ALL of the teachers at my school would have 4 open classes for the year. One each semester for parents, 1 to be videoed, and 1 eval like last year. My open class for parents is next week, and thankfully I only have 1 class that day.

My CT told me not to change anything (and if he changes his tune the day before, too bad!). I had to do 2 year at my old private elementary school, and they were a real dog and pony show. My old CT was pissed when I did not dress up the last one and make it a big show (I was leaving and thought that having the parents see what I really did was a great idea). She ran around making everything look nice.

My husband has been told he will do 4 as well (elementary school) but he has no idea when they will be. His will probably be sprung on him, but he actually preps and coteaches with his CTs, and isn't expected to come up with all of his own stuff without input, like I am.

It's not a hagwon. He said this is his first public school job. Also I know this guy in real life, his school enjoys squeezing the proverbial lemon for every drop.

All of the homeroom teachers at my school today are doing open classes. So far I haven't had to give one, but I'm sure I'll have to do it eventually. I truly hope I get to pick the class though. Some kids are more sane than others ya know...

Apparently a lot of parents complained about the new 3rd grade teacher being too strict. WTF? Parents always loved those kinds of teachers back home.

Just make sure they bear no semblance to what or how you usually teach and you should be fine.

Was just told they are shifting a 1st grade class to that day, so I now have 2 classes (my afternoon class will not be observed, thank goodness!) being observed. I confirmed with my lead CT to just do my regular thing. But, I have to say, my school is MUCH mellower than the average school for a lot of things.

I think the quality and reputation of your school has something to do with it. My last school wasnt nice at all, had no english classroom and barely had enough room for 40 kids in my class. However, the school i work at now is much nicer/bigger, have an english class, yadayada. so, i would expect a couple more open classes. i'm really practical, so I will not be doing anything different than i would normally do. however, i will be prepared, just so i dont look bad. but everything else will be the same. there are just too many differences between schools to make everyone's class like mine.

i am for going to another teacher's class for some kind of training. never helped me, but the q and a at the end is the best part.
