An American who has apparently operated an private English conversation school for decades in Japan has been arrested for molesting his students:
An American man running an English school in Fukuoka Prefecture has been indicted for allegedly shooting pornographic images of a girl who was his student, investigative sources said Monday. The 69-year-old resident of Fukuoka City was indicted in early March after police seized from his home more than 600 videotapes and photographs comprising images of dozens of his students, mostly elementary school-aged girls, they said.
The man was initially arrested in January on suspicion of conducting lewd acts on his students but released later without being indicted, according to the sources.
This story has been getting pretty big attention on the news tonight.
Heres a quote from the Yomiuris article about it, including an excuse the man gave when questioned by the police:
「撮影は子供が大人になった時、成長記録として見せてやるつもりだった」
I filmed the children so that, when they became adults, I could show them a record of their growth.
If some of his lewd acts took place after the cops let him go free in January, police have some serious questions to answer |
Bastard should have rot in prison. |

I hate this stuff, not only because it makes foreigners look like [Mod Edit] in the eyes of some asians, but mostly because it makes foreigners look like [Mod Edit] in the eyes of asians who hear about it.
(insert pained expression)

As horrible as this story is, it is a sad fact that in today's Japan this story isn't really all that surprising or shocking.
Now, before you all get your panties in a twist, I am NOT saying that these kind of crimes are rampant in Japan and therefore this case isn't newsworthy. Japan is still a very safe place.
What I am saying is that the one horrible news story for the day is usually much more bizzarre and twisted than this one. 99.9% of the time committed by a Japanese.
Some of you may find it hard to believe but Japan isn't the same country as it was even 10 years ago. Foreigners no longer hold the "shock", "glamour" or "mysterious/dangerous other" value we once apparently had.
This story will have no more or less effect on the foreign population than if it had been commited by a Japanese. It will be viewed as just another unfortunate case of a disgusting human being taking advantage of his/her position.
In my six years here, after two previous stints in Japan, I can say that there is a marked difference here these days. You can't even spook children these days by just being foreign and suddenly turning a corner and surprising them.
Just the other day a lone, little, 6 year old boy blurted out "see you" as we simultaneously left the conveniece store, his mother waiting for him in the car. Not taking the piss, not giggling, not pointing me out to his friends, not at the prodding of his mother. Just a simple nonchalant "see you". Strange, but one of my nicest moments in Japan. And they are happening with a more and more refreshing frequency. |

Its mostly the 40's & 50's agegroup that can't deal with the sight of a foreigner. some of them are really pathetic. |

Yeah, right.
AS if a 69-year-old can still get it up.
