What explanation does Korean Immigration have for asking us to give them our passports when applying for the ARC? Kinda worrying that they have access to all the info on there: personal, biometrics, travel history. Wouldn't want all that info used to make a duplicate passport for the South Korean spy agency. Is giving up your passport standard practice for ARCS in other countries?

I mean, they gave me an ARC. Shouldn't that say something?

You're onto something here. In fact, from what I've heard 2MB uses the biometric data from the passports to create a clone of you. Right now, in an underground bunker in Dokdo, there are thousands of vats containing these clones, which, thanks to Korea's expertise at advanced medical techniques, will be ready to be harvested in about ten weeks. I don't like to say what happens next, but I would advise you to leave the country as fast as possible and then find a policeman. I myself am perfectly safe, because my passport was issued in 2002, before this biometric scanning thing came in.

OP does have a point. Why do they have to keep your passport? I understand that consulates need to keep passports for visa stamping, but we already have a stamp.

As for biometrics, you should be worried. Clones of you can be replicated to replace you as a teacher and your copy won't expect pay, flights, or anything except housing and Korean food, because it will be brainwarshed into being of great service to the Korean people. No people, it's not the robots replacing us in 5 years from now, it's the clones of Westerners who once taught in Korea. LOL. Just kidding. Maybe it's not so funny, because it may be possible in 5 years. Funny brain fart.

It's caffeine, not marijuana.

I want to know why they hold our passports since they better have a god reason for keeping you in Korea in the meantime. What if you has a family emergency and needed to fly home, for example?

And about clones: would you want a Korean-made clone of you walking around? Maybe a Japanese or German-engineered one, but definitely not Korean. Smile

They "keep" them for the same reason that YOUR own country does when they process non resident alien cards.
Just because!
You ask 10 different immigration folks why they need the passport and you'll get 10 different answers!
