HD TV Trouble

I got the LG Flatron M2762D last night. When I plugged it in and searched for channels I was able to find several DTV channels, some "normal" channels, and the basic HD channels.

When I tried to watch them in HD, the image and sound got choppy. It would work and look nice for a few seconds, then get choppy, then get nice, then choppy.. and so on and so on.

I have a basic coaxial cable going from the wall to the back of the TV. Do I need to buy a new cable? Do I need a HD cable box?
