Does anyone have experience with this?
I'm planning to come to SK in May, but I've built up a bit of a freelance base. I don't get enough work to live solely off of freelancing, but it's a nice supplement. With freelancing, it's very much a "what have you done for me lately" kind of deal. If I'm not available for work, they'll find someone who is and start relying on them. So, I still want to take on jobs while I'm in SK so that I don't lose my contacts. Before I leave, I want to make sure there aren't any bureaucratic snags that might prevent me from doing this. Does anyone have experience with this? Is there anything that might prevent me from working for a US or British company while in SK? Do I have to pay Korean taxes on the earned income?
Second issue: I also teach online classes for a university of ill-repute. I wouldn't call it a university so much as a drain on the US financial aid system and a way for people to accrue debt without gaining anything valuable in return. They say that you have to be in the US to teach for them, but when I asked my supervisor why that was, and if there were legal requirements preventing them from employing people who weren't in the US, he said "no, but students need to be able to contact you easily." So, with Skype and internet proxies, I feel pretty confident that I can ensure that they have no idea what country I'm in. While some might consider it immoral to mislead them, I feel justified in doing so for various reasons that I won't go into. Suffice to say that I very regularly have students signed up for my class who don't have a computer or access to the internet. For an online class. On the interwebs. How does that happen? One can only guess. I also had a homeless person in my class once. Anyways, this isn't meant to be a rant about online education. Has anyone done something like this? Heard of anyone doing it? Can you think of a reason why it might not work? Would I report this income for US taxes?
Not being able to do these things wouldn't prevent me from coming to SK, but extra money is nice and these are not very time-intensive ways of making it. |
