currrently in the process of moving into new housing. the university has built a new housing complex for both students and instructors. of course the apartments are new (although quite a bit smaller than our old apartments), so generally we should be better off than before.

here's the problem. i've been seeing and reading news reports in the korean news that warn people about harmful agents in building materials that can cause breathing disorders and skin rashes. among other toxicants formaldehyde, benzine, and toluene have been cited. the korean government has just imposed guidelines for acceptable levels of these toxicants in new buildings, but these regulations were absent when our new building was under construction. as an asthmatic i'm slightly concerned about how this might affect my health after the move.

anybody else heard anything about this?

Homer takes any criticism of Korea as a personal attack... Wink

Sometimes he goes a little too far. But then we all do.

I suggest you do your research. I moved into a newly rehabilitated apartment in Seattle about 12 years ago- new carpet, wall board, composition board (plywood) cabinets. These all contain a lot of formaldehyde. The formaldehyde is "outgasses" for years, but it is the worst at first. I was really sick for over a year with "chronic fatigue" symtoms, as well as upper respiratory problems. I moved out after a few months, after I had gotten very ill. My doctor (the Chief of Internal Medicine for the University of Washington) said that this had happend when the public housing in Seattle was rehabbed, and hundreds of people became ill.

I would be cautious. Clearly, not everyone who lives in new buildings gets sick, but it is a real problem. It is especially a problem in new buildings with good insulation and poor ventilation.
