I used to go to the tents near Jongno station all the time but I drove by there last night and it looks like everything is gone. I had heard they made all the vendors leave but where did they all move to?

And, how can I get there?

No idea what happened in the subject line. Can a mod change it to Jongno 포장마차's - Where did they go?

Getting rid of the vendors in Iteawon would be nice too. It's annoying how they block the people walking down the street.

Having street vendors is wonderful, especially in a country where they don't shout at you.

Getting rid of them strips the culture from the streets.

Have you ever been to a gentrified area in a major city? It looks clean and well-groomed, but it's BORING! I'll gladly accept some grit and grime (and less walking space) if it makes for an interesting and unique place.

totally agree with this sentiment. look at frikkin itaewon now, it's becoming family oriented for chrissakes. i miss the old seedy, dirty, might-get-jumped-at-any-second itaewon, not this popular destination for lovey-dovey couples for exotic foods place it's become now.

death to gentrification

i dunno, rows after rows of odeng and ddeok bokki? i could do without.

if they got rid of the filipino market in hyehwa, that's a bigger tragedy. i can get odeng and ddeok bokki (on or off the street) anywhere

It gets to stay, for now:

The Korea Times reported last Feb. 11 that the office planned to relocate the market by March, citing complaints about traffic congestion, garbage and disorderliness in the area from passers-by and residents.

The office is full of BS. Traffic congestion: It doesn't not congest road traffic at all. If the city was concerned about road traffic, and especially safety, at the Hyehwa rotary, they would have turned it into a proper intersection when they demolished the rotary bridge over 2 years ago. The rotary is a damn nightmare to drive through. Garbage: I can show the city many, many dirtier places in Jongno that don't have street markets. Or, why not put out some fking trash cans? Or enforce litter laws? Disorderliness: BS. Not once do the Filipinos or local Korean residents get disorderly. That corner of the rotary doesn't even connect with a residential street! You have to walk to the market, not thru it trying to get to your apartment.

The corner with the Filipino market is not the problem area when it comes to trash and congestion....it's the area by exits 1 and 4! They get so full of people and people leave soooo much litter.

Trying to say this about the Filipino market is just an excuse, IMO. I should know, I live here. And Sunday afternoons are just about the nicest time to walk around Hyewha (although Monday mornings are usually the cleanest).

Well it's a completely different story if that happens to be your neighbourhood. For example,

I live in Itaewon. On the weekends running a simlpe errand becomes a begrudging task. The vendors are just trying to make a buck, but then you've got the punters who are walking like sunday drivers. I don't blame either party, but it's bloody excruciating when you've got a point A to point B situation. It takes more patience than I have to serpentine through the crowds and not utter curses at every person you pass.

But when it comes to any other area in Seoul, I turn into one of the sunday driving punters.
