I'm in Vegas right now. Just saw a woman who put in $1100 into a machine with a max jackpot of $1000. Literally put in $1100 at the beginning and played it all the way down to zero.

Reminds me of a guy I once played with who bet so much and so randomly (he covered the *entire* table with chips) on each spin in roulette, that no matter where the ball landed, he was going to lose money.

Sometimes I just want to grab these degenerates by the shoulders, shake them, and yell "WTF are you thinking?!?!?!"

That said, my personal kyrptonite are the various Star Wars slot machines. I'll keep playing them until I hit the bonus game regardless of how much I lose, mostly because I want to see what the bonus game looks like. Played today next to a guy that looked like a fatter George Lucas. I figured he would be lucky. I was wrong. Crying or Very sad

I like the old folks with the rechargeable cards attached to them on cords. When they plug those babies into the slot machine it looks like they're on life support.

It's a strange compulsive behavior, that's for sure. I could only do it by looking for the games that give me the most favorable odds - probably roulette or something - just betting on the red or the black. Most of the games are just as rigged as a carnival but they allow a few winners, and can afford it when it's on such a high scale.

There's always the martingale betting strategy, haha, good luck with that one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_%28roulette_system%29

The maximum bets are usually too low for that to work.

I usually pick a number in roulette and minimum bet it. You win quite big when it comes in, and it takes like an hour to get through 50 bucks. If you hit a few wins you can play all day. You aren't going to walk out a millionaire, but it's good entertainment for your dollar.

Another strategy is to bet on thirds in roulette. Wait until a third hasn't come up in 5 or so spins then bet on it using the double up/martingale method. Each time you lose, double the bet.

OP: Perhaps the players you mention were playing THEIR "personal Kryptonite"s.

Agreed on the Star Wars machines. Won $800 on the Dirty Harry slot at The Four Queens on Fremont back in 2008.

I usually reinvest my winnings on dinners and shows. Saw Jay Leno, Beatles Love, Phantom, Toni Braxton and Spamalot on 2006-2008 winnings.

The game with the most favorable odds in the casino is definitely NOT roulette, with its house edge of 5.3% for American (double zero) roulette and 2.7% for European (single zero) roulette.

The best bang for your gambling buck is Blackjack played according to basic strategy (http://wizardofodds.com/blackjack) with about .5% house edge. If you can't be bothered to learn a strategy or bring a strategy card with you to the table (available for $2 in any Vegas gift shop), stick to the Pass Line in craps for about a 1.4% house edge.
