Why? Future population growth might be an issue if taken far enough, but the world's current population is totally sustainable. |
Totally agree with you. Don't like all those dooms-sayers saying the earth is over populated. |
You may not like it, but is it true? |

Would you be willing to be sterilized? How about your children? Would you wish it upon them? |
Its more a case of "have only 1 or 2 kids max, not 20".
The earth cannot furnish all 6.8 billion people with an equally high standard of living. if you are determined to increase that population even higher, an even smaller % of people will be able to enjoy such a lifestyle.
I really don't understand why people want there to be 20 billion humans crammed like sardines on the planet. What is the objective exactly? |

Great.
Does anyone else think Dave's has become utterly hopeless for intelligent debate by interesting people on interesting topics? |

Hopefully, the recent decrease in quality is just a temporary lull. |

Clearly, nautilis, you have proven yourself incompetent to comprehend his complex, yet unadorned, wisdom.

I love the eugenics issue. It's where common sense meets genocide. As outwardly repellent the idea of population control is, you often don't have to scratch too deeply to find widespread support for the belief which underlies it:
We must take care of our own <family/tribe/race/religion/country> first.
You might come to that belief from a biological point of view, in which population booms and crashes are natural, and that the fittest are entitled to survival at the expense of the unfit.
You might take a religious point of view, for example Judaism, which operates within the paradigm of tribes fighting for survival, and whose Old Testament God regularly issued orders for the annihilation of the enemy.
Or you perhaps you are from an elite family, rich and powerful beyond the wildest dreams of ordinary folk, and you seek to preserve your wealth and status, and the security and continuity of your family. An overpopulated world is a threat to this, so you fund think tanks to wargame solutions, and maybe develop the infrastructure for a more hands-on approach should that be required.
In each of the above cases, there is a percieved threat and an expendable other. And, lets face it, the majority people of people subscribe to such views. They do, after all, arise directly from the the conditions of our biological and social evolution.
Can anyone suggest alternatives? |
