I saw some really cool gloves online which are touch screen compatible. Those may be the next trend in Korea.. |

I had to tether mine to my Macbook Pro to check my email to get a PPT file and ate up 30MB in one go. A couple more times of doing that and by the end of two weeks i'd hit 546MB so...can't wait to get my bill. |

| I'm not sure if this was addressed because I didn't feel like scanning 25 pages of information but I currently have an Iphone in the states and I'm wondering if its possible to use it in Korea. I could just leave it with my parents but well, why give it up... |

That question has probably been asked 10+ times in this thread. Short answer is no, longer answer is yes. |

| Just went to my local KT Show store and was denied an iPhone. They said I could get one but it would cost me 600,000 won for the 16gb and 700,000 for the 32gb. The lady said it's because my F4 visa expires in less than 2 years. In order to get the phone cheaper, I would have to renew my visa... Is there a way around this? |

No. Get it in your friend's, family's, or girlfriend's name. |

Wish I could. I don't have family in Korea, all my friends are Westerners, and currently single haha. I'll probably just get some free phone with a different provider... |

SKT is the way to go. They're not strict about that at all. |

if you're on an e2, good luck getting an iphone in your name. good luck dealing with kt at all!!
all of my dealings with kt have been absolutely terrible. its like they go out of their way to not deal with foreigners.
here is my unlocked iphone activation story:
i bought an unlocked iphone from hong kong like 6 weeks ago. i had to take it to the kcc/rra to get it certified. took a month for the testing and certification.
this past week i was all ready to get my phone activated with kt. i called the english support line like 3 times to check, double check, and triple check the procedure.
the lady told me that all i needed to do was to take my phone and certification document to a kt shop to get activated.
i picked up my certificate on friday afternoon. i went to the kt store beside the kcc building. they told me to go to ipark mall 8th floor - kt office.
i got there at 5pm on friday and didnt leave until about 730. the whole time i was talking to the support people and the idiot clerk who was assisting me.
they kept giving me the runaround and telling me to sign up via the internet (even though the internet activation process wont accept foreigners alien card numbers).
on saturday i went to a kt shop in bundang with my girlfriend. the guy told us to go to the kt plaza where there is a customer service center in seongnam. he was sure that was the place.
went there this morning and spent an hour dealing with the lady. again the customer service people on the phone were giving me the runaround.
sooooo...i called skt (i am an skt customer). i asked them about how to activate my phone with their network.
they told me to go to the tworld shop in gangnam.
went to the gangnam shop and after about an hour switching out my usim and waiting for the phone, my iphone was activated. the clerk didnt speak a lick of english but she immediately called the english support line and the english speaking customer service rep walked us through the process. a joy to work with!
skt doesnt even sell the iphone and they did a hell of an amazing job helping me set mine up on their network.
meanwhile, every single kt person i spoke with was trying to pass the buck to the next guy.
kt is absolutely worthless.
good luck getting any help from them if you're a foreigner... |
Hi Steveohan,
I would certainly appreciate it if you could share with me several things that you have done with regard to the "SK iPhone" that you bought in Hongkong :
aaa. where is the kcc/rra office located, and what sort of documentation would they require?
bbb. is the service limited to iPhone only, or would they do other phone such as Blackberry and Nokia?
ccc. During that registration process, are you still able to use your wifi in your iphone?
ddd. Since it is a factory unlocked phone, after the registration, have you tried to insert different non korean sim card in it?
Thank you so much .. I am in the middle of the process of choosing either the Motoroi , iPhone or just stick with my Blackberry Bold 9700 from US tmobile, that i can use as long as i have wifi around, without having to turn the mobile-network. |

Not sure what it is supposed to have changed, but my phone crashed for the first time and "shuffle" seems to screw up a lot after I installed it. |

It doesn't change anything that would cause what you are describing. A carrier update has certain preferences for the phone company you use. Things it includes are settings for accessing phone service etc for that particular carrier.
Also, it can be used to add things like a default bookmark to naver in your safari bookmarks etc, and used to enable and disable certain phone services that the company may or may not be equipped to provide (such as MMS, Visual Voicemail, etc.).
It's also been used to disable the "find my iphone" feature on korean iphones, but I provided an edited carrier file awhile back which re-enables the feature. In case anyone was wondering, I've recently edited the newest carrier file also to re-enable the "find my iphone" feature also, and i'll provide the the link to it sometime soon in case you guys want to download and install it.
EDIT: here is the link to the information about the edited carrier file:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=175571&start=15&sid=1b3c7d4ddefc6b55faf0f23aedb6567b
P.S.: In case anyone is worried, a carrier file update does not affect jailbroken phones, so you can install it without worry. |
