DD, that reminds me.

The History Channel's Hillbilly: The Real Story with Billy Ray Cyrus as host (yea, Miley's dad) is a really good look at the history of Appalachia. Including the coal miner's strikes, how the people survived, moonshining, and running 'shine from the revenuers during the depression.

Thanks Kikomon,

I'll look into that. I'm not a big one for the history channel - so often they really "gloss over" a lot of history and don't get the "real story". But there are exceptions I'm sure... it is an interesting time/place - I find like Canada's Cape Breton, a story that really is the story of us all....

Cheers,

DD

Off The Grid: Life on the Mesa is an interesting doc that looks at a group of people living off the grid.

I'm gonna second all the Adam Curtis documentaries mentioned....

start with the Century of the Self 2002
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432232/

work your way up to The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear 2004
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430484/

and his most recent - the masterly The Trap: What happened to Our Dream of Freedom 2007.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0979263/

All brilliant, thought provoking essays on power, manipulation, ideology..

oooh and I just noticed he did a new one last year ..It felt Like a Kiss....right I'm off to download that right away....
