|
|
I was searching around to see if the Core i7-980X CPU was available in Korea and, if so, what it was priced at. I didn't see any place that you could buy it here, but I did find a link on Gmarket to a notebook computer supposedly containing it. I am only posting this for entertainment purposes, because I really don't see many people buying this laptop. http://gen.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=181750829&GoodsSale=Y&jaehuid=200002657&service_id=pcdn. It's 5.4kg! Approximately 12 pounds! Truly, a desktop replacement But, if you needed a ridiculously powerful computer that is (semi-)portable, and money was no object, this is the one to get.
I personally want to get the new Sony Z series ultraportable here http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/sony-vaio-z-series-vpcz114gx-s-review/. If I can sell my Macbook Pro, you can bet I'll be making that upgrade!
Why am I posting this here? I just thought it might be worth discussing what different people think the "ultimate notebook" is like. For me, it's the Sony Z. It's really powerful (not the most powerful, but still really powerful), really portable, and it has a great high-resolution screen (for me, there is no such thing as a resolution that is too high). I read that they will even be releasing a 1080p version of the laptop later on...even better!
So what is your "ultimate laptop"? If money was no object, which one laptop would you buy? |

I have the base model of the top-end Macbook Pro. It has nice physical construction and the fit-and-finish is impeccable. However, it is definitely overpriced and lacking in its performance. The new Dell laptops with the cheapest core i3 option are slightly better than the 2.66 GHz Macbook Pro.
P.S. Please buy my Macbook Pro |

The new macbooks, coming soon, are meant to have the i5. I might look at one if I'm feeling rich and they have hdmi out. |

I'd rate this bad boy as one of the best around for spec/price ratio anyway..
Asus G Series G73JH-X1........$1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220695
i7 processor
8GB RAM
HD5870 GPU (wow!)
Just 8lbs......very light for a 17'' gaming laptop with 8GB, an ATI 5870 GPU, an i7 processor, and just about every feature under the sun.
It'll blow away a 17'' Macbookpro despite being roughly $1000 cheaper. The 17'' Macbookpro seemed like a pretty hot machine when it was released in January 2009.....it sure doesn't now....considering the fact it still costs $2600.....Apple must have balls the size of.......aw, nevermind.... |

We both know they won't have HDMI out . Of course, monoprice has a Mini Displayport to HDMI cable for around $10. So far, Apple hasn't implemented audio through Mini Displayport yet. |

Pure performance-wise and aesthetics - yes. If you include "price" or "value for money" or "software/gaming compatibility (Korea especially)" than no. |

Performance-wise, no. The MBP has been overtaken significantly since its release. See my post above.
The only reasons to buy a MBP is if you really like the aesthetics. |

But using the laptop above is not a fair comparison because you're comparing a brand new laptop with the current line of MBP which is quite old. The MBP will probably be updated this summer as it's been about a year since the last MBP. The new line up will most likely have the i5/i7 chipset as well as upgraded graphics card. Then it will be a fair comparison. Otherwise take the top of the line laptop that came out same time as this generation MBP and see who comes out on top. I'm willing to bet it's the MBP. The OP is asking for the "ultimate laptop line" not "which laptop has the best specs right now" which in my opinion, is the tried and true MBP. |

the argument that comparing a new laptop to an older mbc is a non starter as u have to compare the products out there right now...if your buying now otherwise u can always say theres something bigger better around the corner. thats tech full stop...even with a refresh i doubt the mbp will have these specs eamo dropped. apple is notorious for lagging in tech power and drip feeding features while announcing it as a massive new innovaton. however it has the slickest user os and the design of the laptop itself is 2nd to none. but im too used to windows and hate itunes to bother. apples main sell is their aesthetics and they know it by charging a huge premium for it. its all about preference of course. mine is vfm hence not mac. but if u got the cash to burn why the hell not?! |

Well, that's not the way the computer industry works. Everything changes every 6 months. If Apple can't refresh their long-in-the-tooth lines a bit more quickly then they should at least acknowledge that their products are behind the curve by lowering the price a bit after a product is 1 year old. An eon in computer terms.
Why don't they? Well, that's something you need to ask Macheads. A few minutes talking to an Apple fanboy and it's apparent why Apple don't feel a need to lower prices on 1 year old laptops. |

Ain't that the truth.
They're often grasping for straws defending their pretty little machines. It gets to the point where sometimes I even question if I'm wrong about the company--IS there more to Apple than a ridiculously good marketing dept.? Fortunately, I quickly realize how passionate they are over absolutely nothing. Most Apple users I've met probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference if I put a $180 netbook into an MBP case. |

dude, if you want the macdaddy's of laptops that is well rounded with very high customer satisfaction, I think its already been said but its the 17" Macbook Pro. PERIOD.
But I would not buy it until they refresh the line which is way overdue. I understand that their focus had been on the iPad of late, then iPhone/Touch.
I can see a new MBP in April after the iPad comes out. They'll do a small media event where the introduce the new MBP's and brag about the success of the new iPad. Typical Apple.
But I realize Macs are not for everyone. Only for people with standards. |

If I ever buy another laptop, it'll be a thinkpad or other lenovo product. I've had a couple of "gamer" laptops, but they ended up sucking. They had the newest processor, video card and everything else, but they would either overheat or have some other problem that cost a fortune to fix. Lenovos are built well. There are some with great graphics cards, but essentially they're built to work well and stay operational. I regret selling mine for a computer with a better graphics card that took three times as long to boot. |
