I'm bottom rung on the pay chart with EPIK (which is fine by me really). But before I left for Korea I started a TESOL online, but didn't complete it. I'm wondering if I finish it will I be eligible for a pay raise mid-contract? If been told (by questionable sources) that this may be the case.

Does anyone have experience with this? I assume if someone with my school is willing to put in the time/paper work it's probably doable....

Check with EPIK. For the February orientation it depended on the province. Most provinces you would not be eligible. It might have changed though.

Look for a clause like this one in your contract:

Article 9(Salary)

9. If Employee obtains further degree or certificate during the contract term, he/she will be promoted to the next applicable employment category (with corresponding raise in salary)in the month following once the necessary document has been submitted. However, promotions shall be limited to one pay category increase per year. (ie Category 3 to 2, Category 2 to 2+; not Category 2 to 1)

So yes, if you complete the TESOL AND present the certificate to your school you WILL be entitled to a salary increase in the MONTH FOLLOWING your submission of said certificate.

.

Depends on your contract. Certain versions have a specific clause that allows you to get a raise the next month, other contracts require you to wait until you have a whole new contract (at the end of your year.)

Also, some district education boards are more lenient with it than others. For example, my board would give the raise halfway through a contract regardless of what your contract said, until last year, when they were told they had to stop doing that. Best bet is to just check your contract.
