while mostly happy with my university job, i am thinking of making a move.
this thread is for university teachers who think they have a plum gig (and are magnanimous enough to share the info)...

while salary is a bonus, a killer apartment or fun campus neighborhood are also positive aspects of the ideal uni job.

where are the hours short, the pay long and the vacation longer?

It would also be useful for others to know negative aspects about certain gigs too.

A good place to start is why people want to change from one uni to another.

Hongik University and Yonsei would be in a more "active" neighbourhood.

I think you'll find that most uni jobs in Seoul don't have free housing provided. I can say that SNU's LEI provided a really nice housing situation.

But I think he wants to work in a proper university, not a unigwon

Ummm, Edward, at least try to word your comments properly. SNU is a proper university.

He asked about a plum job... and I think SNU's LEI job would be considered that. It offers good salary and vacation in addition to excellent housing. It's located on Line #2 which allows for easy transit around Seoul, and it's easy to get over to Hongdae and very close to Gangnam. In addition, the area has a lot of restaurants which are very good prices, which definitely helps in saving money. It's not a perfect job, but if someone wants to earn a lot of money, have good vacation, and get nice free housing, then it's definitely a job that offers that.

Ummm, that's about the dumbest thing I've ever seen you type on here....which is actually quite an achievement. Let me get this straight, now SNU isn't a proper university?

LEI is SNU's hagwon, hence unigwon. I think the intended meaning was that a departmental job in a university is what the OP wants.

Beaver,

The OP doesn't specifically say that.

Not sure why all you guys look down on the LEI... really doesn't make sense. So it's a unigwon...big deal. You guys don't like like free housing and a chance to earn a lot of money.

For someone on an E2 visa that doesn't want to private tutor, then the SNU LEI job offers more total salary opportunity than any other university job in Seoul. If you disagree, please feel free to post your total earnings and prove me wrong.

True, it does depend on the OP's intended target - English language department position, faculty lecturer, unigwon instructor or all of the above.

I have been paid around the 2.6~3.3 million mark for teaching English in some universities and 4 million for faculty positons depend on what exactly you are teaching and your qualifications. I have seen PhDs getting 5 million for 9 teaching hours advertised. I teach 12 hours and am employed as faculty, teaching education not English language.

If you want to make extra money then I advise going the testing, overtime classes route instead of doing privates.

I'm on an E2 and I'm working at a University right now on 5.1 base. Plus key money, 750,000 housing allowance, and 1 million in overtime a month. How about you?

Edward, you have what appears to be the best job I've heard of so far... congratulations...

but SNU's LEI job still has many benefits that place it in the category of a very good job.

The OP asked about short hours and long vacation. It really doesn't sound like he cares what department he's in.
