The other option is to just go to immigration and TELL them that you quit your job.
They will cancel your visa and give you a 30 day exit order (means you have to leave within 30 days - no extensions). You CAN leave and return without consequence.
Find a new job (if you really want one) and start the visa process over again.
Jump to Japan, get a new visa and try again.

Does Immigration ALWAYS cancel an E2 visa when you do this, or are you recommending this because the OP doesn't have an ARC yet? |

Hi There,
I would be organising how to get out of Korea at any rate.
Even if the OP really doesn't have an arc it is very likely you have a work visa stamp. Leave the country before trying again. Sorry to say you may have to work in another country if you don't want to wait.
But if they have a work visa stamp or arc and it is handed in, immigration might call the school to let them know.
I think the granting of 30 days to leave normal work is unusual. It allows the employer to make a fuss and a person would have to stay somewhere during that time anyway.
I have heard if visas are cancelled by the school, E2's should leave the day after the visa is cancelled. |

I was told by my recruitment agent (who's Korean) that the end date is 2-4 weeks after an E2 visa is cancelled. |

Go to immigration, tell them that you quit and make sure you get an exit order.
They HAVE to cancel your visa status in this case - it's the only way you can get the exit order.
Doing this also usually prevents your employer from filing a complaint against you first (which could complicate a new visa application) ... he doesn't know you are there and you get to complain first.

Back in the old days you had 14 days after the end of your employment; IF you quit early (material change in status) to leave.
NOW, If you quit early and DON'T go to immigration that is STILL the case.
IF you go to immigration and let them know then you will get a 30 day exit order (but you are NOT allowed to work during this period).

Went to immigration today, had an English speaking officer which was a relief. As it turns out, since I was never issued an alien card, my status in Korea defaults to my entry stamp as a tourist. So once I leave before that final date, my E2 visa will be automatically cancelled. My former employer can't do anything because she never completed the final paperwork for my visa.
Thanks again everyone for your advice! |
