So... I have a beginner adult class (the students speak very little English). The people who taught this level before I was assigned to it were all native Koreans and would spend a large amount of the class time explaining the grammar to the students in Korean. My Korean is only so-so, so I need to think of a different way to get the point across to my students.

I was wondering for those of you in similar situations--how do you get your students to come out of their shells and start actively participating in class (they're a little shy)? And how do you explain grammar to students who have very little understanding of English?

Use a textbook based course. Either "Side by Side" or "Interchange".
Adults really appreciate it when you give them the material in advance so they can take it home and study it. However you will need to make extra copies in case some students forget the material at home.
If you have one student who is slightly higher than the rest then assign him/her as a translator.

Don't worry about your poor Korean speaking ability. It may be possible you were assigned this task because the previous teachers used too much Korean.
