|
|
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone owns any pets in their apartments provided by the schools. I have heard that many apt buildings in Korea have no-pet policies, but that they aren`t strictly followed.
I`m going to Seoul this summer, and I`ve been wondering about getting a kitten or small pet there to keep me company while overseas. I love animals, but don`t want to get kicked out of my apartment or forced to get rid of it if the landlord finds out.
I`ve seen some online blogs from teachers in Seoul who state that they own pets, and even suggest for people to get pets as it enriches their life over there.
Does anyone have any critter friends and are they permitted where you live? |

There are many ppl here with pets. We brought our cat from The States and we have our dog and 2 fosters. Our first landlord said no but when we said our cat is in quarantine and we will get her in 2 weeks he said it's fine. Our new landlord never batted an eye about our cat and dog. We live outside of Daegu and many ppl in our neighborhood of villas have pets.
With all that being said I guess it will depend on your landlord. |

I've seen a couple of small dogs in my building. I have 2 rats, but made sure to order the little guys to my friend's workplace (she's the owner) and when the larger cage (those things grow quickly!) came from the US, I told the security guy "rabbit." |

I have 2 hamsters (thinking of getting a cat, too) and my school knows about them. They don't seem to care. *shrug* |

I've been fostering a cat for 4 months or so now... Never told my school or my landlord...
In Korea anything's legal, so long as you don't get caught... |

Can anyone tell me about this "fostering a cat"? How do you find these animals that need homes? I desperately would love to take a cat but I can't commit to owning one permanently. Anyone know? |

Hi,
There are plenty on www.animalrescuekorea.org.
You could join and keep an eye on the board.
Also I think one in the buy sell trade forum needs taking at the moment.
Ideally those that are looking for adoptive homes don't always get them...so keep an eye on adoptable animals on the site too.
I hear there are many cats at the daejeon shelter out at yuseong that need rescuing. PM me for directions.
You will just need to take a carry case if you want to bring one back. |

I've never heard of employer's supplying pets, it would sure be awsome if they did! |

My school knows about my pets. It freaks them out a bit, but does keep them from popping by
The kids seem to love that I have 2 "mouse" (I teach them that 2 would be mice but I have rats, which are BIG mice, as they don't differentiate in Korean except to say small and big) and always come by after classes to see if I've got any new photos or videos. They love the after-bath ones.
I was teaching a teachers' class last week and we were discussing pets and they mentioned my "mouses" (again I corrected them) and I showed them videos. I guess it's okay. Don't mention it until after you've already got it, if you do mention it at all. |

I guess pets would be OK if, as a pet owner, you understand that you are responsible for any and all damages your pet may cause to the apartment. I am renting out an apartment and my contract clearly states that my tenants can have NO pets of any kind. I love animals but I don't want to clean-up after another persons pet. |

I am new to the board and very glad that this conversation is going on today! I am interviewing for a position tomorrow night and was wondering whether I should ask about bringing my cat. But, although I am a honest person, my instinct based on what I'm reading here is that I should simply bring my cat with me without announcing it. It is easier to get forgiveness than permission, after all, and the issue may never even be noticed. |
Are you arranging your own housing? If the school is providing it for you and if a recruiter or representative from you school meets you at the airport or your apartment, be ready for the worst.
After constantly telling our recruiter and schools about our cats they were SHOCKED when we arrived. They said "You can't have cats in Korea," to which we replied that we originally got them in Korea. In the end it didn't matter because we finally got them to understand that we have our own housing but that was after much debate. I'd hate to think what the reaction would have been if we were moving into housing provided by the school.
As far as it being easier to ask for forgiveness: it's much easier for them to just drop you as a teacher. Be up front and let them know that you'll pay more per month, or put down a pet deposit, etc, if it means a lot to have your cat here. The last thing you'd want to do is turn around and go home with your cat if they are caught unaware.
And to everyone: please don't pick up an animal for a year and then put it on the buy/sell forum or on craigslist. Invest your love in your animal and take it back with you! (It's easier than you think... ask me if you want advice.) |

This is what I'm afraid of. THe housing will be provided for by the school. My cat is very well-behaved and wouldn't scratch anything, but I don't want to go through the whole trouble of bringing him over here just to be told I can't keep him. Who would take him back to Canada??? I wouldnt' want to ship him all by himself. He's pretty much a big baby in some senses. Should I ask the recruiting agency about it or tell the potential employer about it? I don't want to lose a job just because I have a cat. I don't NEED to bring him, but I would love to as I don't want to be away from him for a year or more!
I guess I could get a kitten while I'm over there and bring it back to Canada when I'm done. |
