I find it funny how people saying we would be nothing without Ronaldo are now saying we would be nothing without Rooney. The real truth is we finally seem to be playing with a solid midfield for once that was brutally exposed in the game against Barca. Valencia is a stud, Nani has improved, and what can you say about Fletcher other than amazing?

Well you wouldn't be nothing but you would be a worse team. You have been a worse team (just in my opinion watching the games) w/o ronaldo and the quality would drop again without rooney. Obviously tho you could say that about anyone.

Fletcher is tidy..works hard..nothing really special imo. Valencia is interesting. You very rarely see out and out wingers any more. Nice to see though. Park is underrated but similar to Fletcher. Tidy passer.

I don't really rate Man U this year. I tend to think any of the teams that won the last 7 or 8 years would win this year going away. Bit of a weak year overall.

we'll see. i hate chelsea but if howard webb isn't the ref when they play in a few weeks i can see them getting a result, and making it pretty interesting for the final few games. and the premier league is the weakest its been for ages?! please. the standard is better than ever before.

I don't think this tottenham team would make fourth in the last 6 or 7 years, and I think any of the last 6 or 7 champions would win this year pretty handily.

It's not a trend..its just the top teams are weaker than they normally are..imo. Next year they will probably all be improved.

one dodgy lasagne away a few years ago. so, false. everton broke the monopoly as well. the other teams are getting better. you can't blame liverpools performance this season on them being weaker. they've kept pretty much exactly the same squad, incl. the big names, gerrard, torres etc. simple fact, the other teams have got better. hence them losing more games etc. look at all the sky four. all have lost more games this season than in a long time. much more interesting.

One of those top eight teams will break into the top 4, this season or next. One disadvantage those pretender teams have is a lack of squad depth. Everton and Aston Villa especially. They both have young prospects coming through, though. You can't say that for Liverpool. 'Pool are in big trouble imo. They talk about Chelsea's aging squad, but 'Pool's squad aren't exactly spring chickens.

My hot pick for next season is Sunderland. They also have some young prospects, and their midfield (when fit/not suspended) is top notch. If Cana and Cattermole can gel, they will be one of the most physically intimidating midfields in the league. They have genuinely solid players in every position, they just need someone to lead the defense.

They also have a goal scoring monster in Bent, and will probably raise silly money in the form of Kenwyne Jones to Liverpool. Hopefully they replace him with Doyle, when Wolves get relegated. They've proven they can sign top talent, with Djibril Cisse spending a season there, and expressing his desire to remain. They also managed to sign Steed Malbranque, some how. He must be one of the best players in history, never to earn an international cap. Bruce hasn't been great in his first year, but they should give him time. He can still get them into the top 10 yet.

You think the big clubs are losing more games cos the league is more competitive..I think they are just not as good this year. I doubt we will agree.

i'll believe Sunderland when I see it. Liverpool are in massive trouble if they don't make that 4th champion's league spot.

The first link estimates how much they would lose by not playing CL and the second details how that would affect their finances. They aren't buying anyone if they don't make the CL and some big guys will have to go.

Cheers. That was fascinating. I liked this part.

I think we know the answer to that. Leeds, anyone?

got back a month ago, very impressed with the red knights campaign, more green and yellow then red now for United.

Rooney though, the boy is different class altogether. Ronaldo scored two crackers yesterday though.

It's one of those sombre days. We lost - not a disaster in itself, but always disappointing when you make such a good start - but also, obviously, Rooney's injury. Hopefully he's just twisted his ankle and will be ready for weekend.

Darren Fletcher made a great cross for Rooney and it should've been 0-2. See 1m52s: http://www.footytube.com/video/bayern-munchen-manchester-united-mar30-38468

Gosh I hope he recovers soon.

It's not a complete disaster. They only have to win the return leg 1-0 to advance.

Wow, Nani's delivery for the Nani goal was majestic. The Bayern LB had a 'mare. He conceded the penalty then committed a prat-fall to leave Rooney unmarked for the goal. Give yourself 20 upper cuts that man.

Wow. The highlights on that site are great. But what the shit was EVS on about. For a man who has lived in England for less than 2 decades, his ability to butcher the language is top class.

http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/30/bayern-munich-2-1-man-utd-tactics/

I don't really fully agree with this guys take but he is normally my first look when it comes to football tactics.

The one really interesting thing for me was how Bayern solved the 4231 vs 442 problem(442 gets overrun in midfield) by letting Demichelis step forward into midfield(with possession) and by letting a forward drop back to press the deep lying playmaker (carrick) (without possession).

Of course the only way this works is if the CB is comfortable stepping forward. Most aren't.

I saw the whole match on various dodgy feeds..surprised how much possession Bayern had. Thought they were more or less worthy winners in the end.

I can't find it right now but I remember reading a tactical trends of the 2010s article and one of the expected trends is the return of the libero. This is probably good news for Germany...they have churned them out over the years.

I hate studying tactics on TV because 99% of the game happens off the ball. ie off screen. I learned more about tactics watching a couple of dozen amateur matches live, than 200 premier league games on TV. I have aspirations to be a coach at some stage so I would pay big money for an option where you can watch any part of the game at any time.
