Kotesol have another conference coming up.

http://kotesol.org/?q=node/980

Do you think this will be worth getting out of bed for and paying 10,000 won?

Anyone a member and think it's worth the 40,000?

One of the speakers is talking about basic surviving in Korea tips. I can't imagine that being of any use. However some of the topics look somewhat interesting I guess.

Anyone have experience (good or bad) of these conferences?

Kotesol is a great way to learn new ideas and network. Granted not every topic will be to your liking, some presenters might be new to presenting in front of a crowd of native-speakers, it depends on who you are teaching (elementary, middle school,...) and how much experience you have. The tips on surviving in Korea would probably be geared towards newbies I assume.

Totally worth the 40,000 won a year. The Annual Seoul Conference was huge last year (400 people was it?) and I expect it will be this year again.

op, i'm not sure if you work with coteachers or not, but conferences are always a great way to help improve their work in the classroom. i go to as many conferences here that i can and i'll pass along some of the notes and paperwork i got from the sessions. it's a more productive way to give criticism to your CTs, instead of telling them you don't like what they're doing, you can say, ''i went to this conference and there was a really interesting speaker that discussed x and y and i thought we could try that in our classroom..." they'll be much more receptive to that than if you just try to tell them to do something yourself.
i always tell the teachers at my school that i'm attending to show them how serious and committed i am to teaching english at their school. it motivates them to work a bit harder.
as for the conferences themselves, i've used a number of things i've taken from sessions and it's made a huge difference in my classroom. i restructured my entire discipline/reward system based on what i've learned from conferences.

the korea culture lectures are one of maybe 6 options for every time slot. i've been here for a while and don't plan on going to them either, but there's still a lot of interesting, worthwhile stuff. if you haven't heard dave deubelbeiss' speaking yet, i recommend him. he's a frequent poster on esl cafe and runs eflclassroom.com

Try it out once, if you don't like it, you learned something new.
