I just downloaded a file from the EZTV website, but my Windows Media Player won't play it, claiming that it "doesn't know which program created it".
In my video folder it says "MKV file" as opposed to "video clip" for all my other videos.
Is there something I can download that will help me out with this? Or is this some scam to buy software? |
VLC

I also recommend downloading the CCCP codec pack.

Windows Media Player is almost useless. It has very few codecs built-in.
You should download one of the play-all video players. VLC is popular.
For MKV files I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema.
Others which play anything are GOM player and K-Multimedia Player. |

K-lite Codec (ie. Media Player Classic) plays everything. VLC is good too. |

VLC and WMP Classic play lots of files, but they're probably two of the ugliest programs ever. I'd recommend KMPlayer--it's a lot more stable, performs better, has way more features, and is also free. Even if all you'll do is watch videos and nothing else, I'd still go with KMPlayer as it beats VLC/WMPClassic in every category. I'd also take GOM Player over those other two lesser progs.
EDIT: Oh yeah, download the CCCP pack someone above mentioned. If the file specified in the OP is an HD file. I'd also recommend downloading the CoreAVC codecs. They'll improve HD video playback markedly. It's not free, but I wouldn't mind sending you a link to "acquire" them via direct DL if you PM me. |

Haha, Window Media Player. Not having a go, just having a giggle at your expense.
There is a lot of good advice on this thread. My favorite media player is Windows Media Player Classic. |

Between VLC and GOM, anything can be played. |

I tend not to switch programs or update as long as all my needs are being met. VLC meets all my needs. |

CCCP and Zoom Player. VLC is great, but it doesn't properly decode some formats and has trouble with formatting subtitles. Zoom is annoyingly bulky, but it definitely produces the best results. |

The problem i have with VLC player is if you watch anime or foreign movies with subs the subs look horrible even with the additional sub settings it has. I use Quicktime X with Perian - but Quicktime X has slight issue where you should wait until entire movie file has loaded before playing the video. |

These threads crack me up. Every man and his dog comes out of the woodwork with their favourite player/codec solution...
I wonder if the TS now has 7 media players and 5 different codec packs? It should be noted that having multiple codec packs can sometimes cause issues. |
