I am looking for a job with a public school. I'm starting in Sept. and I'd love to get home for x-mas.
I want to buy a round-trip ticket with me leaving in Sept. and coming back in Dec. for break.
Do you think the school would still reimburse me, even if the price remained under the typical 1.3 Mil. cap?
I could do the same with my airfare home(leave home in Dec and arrive back in Sept. of the following year), and hence have a free trip home for xmas.
Would the school be afraid of me running?
Or just resent the 100,000 extra or so that each round-trip ticket would cost?
Any ideas? |

The 1.3 mil won is yours to spend as you want. Time off to go home for xmas is far from a given, in fact probably not on. |

Don't get too far ahead of yourself. You may have to teach a camp which may start right after the students go on break (possibly the 26th). |

So they just give you 1.3 mil?
I guess I'm not clear on this.
I've heard that they reimburse you up to 1.3 mil.
But you are saying it's all mine to spend as I want? Is this standard with EPIK and SMOE? (I've also heard that the two recently merged and some things have changed)
So oskinny1 what about all those great vacation days, when exactly are they?
I was also wondering about your avatar. I'm just not "in" I guess, but I've seen it in a few different versions around here.... |

You'll get a flat 1.3 mil about a month after you arrive to reimburse you for travel expenses getting here. You'll get the same again when you complete your one-year contract. If you sign on for another year, you'll get 2 mil for a home trip (or whatever) instead & the final 1.3 gets pushed back to the end of your final contract.
Your vacation length will vary by province. Figure an average of 2 weeks winter, 2 weeks summer. A couple weeks extra if you renew your contract.
Your school will determine which weeks you have off. Christmas is not a big deal in Asia. |

If you can get open date tickets on the return flight of a round trip ticket, then you would be golden as that's flexible, because you really don't know exactly what days you can go on vacation as schedules can change. Keep in mind Christmas is a Saturday this year so it's not really a holday and I understand the the last day of school to be Friday, December 24th with Winter camps possibly starting on December 27th though they might start on Monday, January 3rd. If so, then you might be able to take 9 days vacation, but not arrive home until late Christmas or December 26th. My co-teacher discussed the Summer and Winter camps and vacations a couple of days ago with me so I have a rough idea about my camps and vacation, but can not set a flight date in stone yet should I want to go see the Great Wall of China or Osaka.
For your air reimbursement, they just want to see an E-ticket to verify that you came from abroad instead of Korea as they don't give you 1.3m Won if you are already in Korea, but only 500,000. That's how it works with my public school job. |

My vacation starts december 23... and as far as I know we have to teach 1-2 weeks camp directly after school finishes, which includes the xmas and new years period...
January is generally vacation time but it varies. |

My school didn't close for winter break until Dec 28th.
This year the 25th (national holiday) and the 26th (normal day) fall on Saturday and Sunday.
Depending on your school and principal, you could probably finish on the 24th and fly home that day in time for Christmas.
The principal is in charge, and may want to treat you well for your first year, or assert their authority. |
