YTN is reporting North Korea has attacked a South Korean Naval ship. Nothing in English yet.

Update: the ROK Navy 초계함 was sunk by North Korea after 9pm today according to rumours.

The news stations are reporting that they are unsure why the ship is sinking.

The news just interrupted the program my wife was watching. They were downplaying the NK angle, but said there were about 100 sailors on board.

BBC is reporting a possible torpedo attack by NK. The Vancouver Sun is saying the same thing.

Hope they are able to rescue as many as they can. This may very well become a huge issue.

I think the DPRK could torpedo this place and they wouldn't bat an eye.

Just what we need, another war.

Anyone got the Guinness book handy? What is the record for simultaneous wars by a country?

New story is that the South Korean ship inadvertently hit an old mine.

Went from "a DPRK attack" to "suspected attack" to "explosion, DPRK suspected" to "old mine" in 20 min flat.

Quickest international crisis ever. (I hope).

Well, every few years there seems to be some type of Naval clash. Kinda like a big earthquake in CA: it's bound to happen at some point.

And they fired on a DPRK ship in "retaliation"? Hoo boy.

Guess we'll have to wait to hear what actually happened.

Would the men on the ship largely be young conscripts? Apparently there was 104 on board and around 30 have thus far been rescued.

In case you forgot, North Korea does have nuclear weapons and its leader is a deified sociopath and its economy is crumbling.

The totalitarian state gave a more vocal than normal threat today, following reports that the U.S. and South Korea were preparing for instability that will occur if Kim Jong-il dies.

"Those who seek to bring down the system in the (North), whether they play a main role or a passive role, will fall victim to the unprecedented nuclear strikes of the invincible army," North Korea's military said in comments carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

Such a subtle country.
