|
|
I'm going to be flying into Seoul in a few weeks and need to get to Pohang. A connecting flight to Pohang airport will cost about $60-70, so I'm wondering how much a KTX ticket from Seoul to Daegu, and then train or bus ticket from there to Pohang will run me. The connecting flight has me waiting for 5 hours just to get on the plane, so the train would definitely be faster, technically. I've never been on the KTX before so I'm not terribly familiar with it. Also, once I land, where would I have to go to catch a KTX train? |

You have to go to Seoul Station to catch the KTX. If you're flying into Incheon it's quite far. I took a taxi from Incheon to Seoul Stn (about 100,000 won) and I think it took about 20-25 mins. Buses and the subway obviously take longer, but they're cheaper.
To take the KTX from Seoul to Dongdaegu Stn. will run around 40,000 won. There are many trains from Dongdaegu to Pohang and it shouldn't be more than 10,000 won. I think it was more like 7,000. It takes about an hour and a half I believe. |

Honestly, its worth the money just to fly. That train trip is no fun, and from the airport to the train station is a decent trip. From Pohang airport to downtown is maybe 12,000 won by taxi. Korean Air, and Asiana fly daily. |

I think you're right. Based on just what Cowgirl and you have said I can see flying will be easier AND cheaper. Jut gotta find something to do for 5 hours in between flights. Thanks! |

Damnit, I forgot that the flight I was thinking about flies into Busan, not Pohang. The flights into Pohang from Gimpo are all too early and leave well before my flight to Incheon lands. I could get a flight down to Busan from Gimpo and then take a train or bus from Busan to Pohang. Would that be any easier/cheaper/quicker than going down by train? |

You'd still have to take the expensive cab ride or the long bus/subway ride, but you can take the KTX directly from Seoul to Busan Stn and it's about 3 hours. |

There is a bus that goes to the Pohang Cross-Country Bus Terminal from the Incheon airport.
View this page for more information (just do a 'find' for Pohang): http://www.airport.kr/airport/traffic/bus/busList.iia?flag=E
I'd suggest this one: Gyeongjoo/Pohang(Direct) (http://www.airport.kr/airport/traffic/bus/busView.iia?seq=88&flag=E), as it doesn't pass through Songdo. The one that passes through Songdo would probably make the bus ride about 30minutes-1hour longer.
Travel time is listed at 300 minutes, with the fare being 40,800.
I suggest the bus in lieu of taking the plane if you're having to stop-over for 5 hours before your flight to Pohang. (Also consider the distance from the bus terminal to your destination)

As for taking the plane to Busan, and then taking a bus to Pohang... would seem to be a waste of time and effort (especially if you're having to go to Incheon->Gimpo).
If you want to take this trek though, you could take the AREX (Express Rail) from Incheon to Gimpo. Once you arrive at Busan, I'm not quite sure if the airport has its own bus terminal, or if you need to commute to one of the city bus terminals. The taxi fare to one of the bus terminals should be minimal (but do your homework, make sure that there even is a bus that goes to Pohang).
Note: You'll be ending up at the same bus terminal as if you took the bus directly from Incheon.
--
Taking a KTX to Busan from Seoul would cost you around 50,000 on the train fare alone (excluding probably the 9000-10,000 on the bus fare to Seoul station). Once you arrive at Busan station, you'll most likely take the subway to Nambu station (which also hosts the Nambu Bus Terminal).
Taxi fare I'm going to just guess will be 20-30,000. Not sure about the bus fare.

Let me know what you think, and I can probably provide you with some better/more detailed information.
Best of luck. |

jk3587 gave some great advice, but just to make a small correction, you want to go to Nopo-dong station (last stop on line 1) and buses to Pohang leave every 10 minutes according to this.
I would just do what he listed first though. 5 hours on the bus isn't so bad if you don't mind the smell of dried squid and insane bus drivers. |
