|
|
Ahhh, I'm so angry right now. So, my parents are visiting me in a few days and we're going down to Busan. Long story short, I reserved (via the KTX English website) 4 seats from Busan to Seoul on KTX, and the price was 191,000 won.
Then I was playing around on the Korean version of the KTX website (I know a little bit of Korean), and the same tickets are available for a "joint seat" option at a price of 119,000 won. That's over 70,000 won cheaper!!!
I tried to reserve them on the Korean website, and with the help of my K-friend was finally able to do it. Anyway, I talked to two different customer service reps and they were all like, "Sorry, you cannot reserve at the cheaper rate on the English website, it not available."
Ahh, this took like 2 hours to figure out. Anyway....beware when reserving on the KTX English website guys, you may be able to get a MUCH cheaper rate if you speak Korean and can use the K-version of the website. |

I didn't think you could get those seats online at all. Is being able to get them on the Korean site relatively new? |

The "joint seats"? They didn't say it was a new feature on the Korean website...the customer service reps acted like the website has always been like that.
As for the English website, yes you can reserve seats on there, but there are no options for grouping and getting cheaper rates. |

Looks to be some sort of transpose error the customer service rep can't fix so you were simply told the lower rate isn't available through the English site. |

Yeah, and after complaining they wouldn't even let me book it over the phone at the joint seat price, or give me any other option other than to go there in person. Quite an inconvenience for expats who live out in the countryside. |

That does suck.
Reminds me of when I went to the bank and tried to get internet banking, they told me no...
I'd say, have a Korean friend call back and purchase the tickets. Don't bring up the last story. Just book as though you are a completely new person.
Good luck |

The same thing happens on other websites as well. I remember shopping around for a flight back to Europe last summer and looked on Korean Air's English website.....flight was around 1.5mil. I thought that was a bit too expensive so looked at the Korean version of the website.......same flight was several hundred thousand won cheaper. I'd call it discrimination but the usual suspects will probably jump me for even putting that out there. |

I ended up registering on the Korean website and paying for the cheaper tickets with my check card. I just think it sucks for foreigners who wouldn't know any better. If I didn't have some basic Korean skills then I would have ended up paying 70,000 more.
I'm not saying it's a blatant discrimination thing on their part, but when I brought it to the representatives attention that it's unfair and misleading for foreigners they were all kind of like, "Oh well." That's what makes me upset....they should change the English website. Ah well...just wanted to warn people for future reference. |

1. Flight prices change literally by the minute.
2. They were probably from different databases. |

1. Only on bucket shops is this really true. The costs of flights on major carriers is fairly static minute to minute.
2. Why would they do this?
Fairly weak apologist reasoning. |

1. You're misinformed.
2. Different sites, probably operated by different contractors, updated by different people at different times. It's really, really common. |
