It may not be a "great" idea... In the past they've usually done the switch-the-room-numbers thing and I let them have their fun. Then at the end of class when they've forgotten about it I mention that its our last class together as I'll be leaving for whatever reason. It's surprising how long it takes sometimes for them to cotton on to it.

I gave my students a test. Its one of those "Read ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS" test where # 1-9 is somethign ridiculous like standing up and spinning in a circle, bark like a dog, etc..." Then Number 10 is "Ignore 1-9, just answer, "What day is it today?"

I came in the class all serious, put the tests down facedown. Started a timer, etc...

It was fun.

You are right. They do not recognize nor do April Fools day. When I asked what day it is and I began to indicate it's Friday, my co-teacher got annoyed with me and so we had some friction. Annoying that every day life is so craptastically miserable instead of adding the extras that can make the experience enjoyable rather than being simply a mindless reptitious routine.

My students actually brought it up before I did today. They'd played some tricks on each other.

One of the students, who already had one broken arm, came to class with the other one broken as well and I asked him if it was an April Fool's Day joke for his teachers, but... alas, it was not. Shocked

They totally have April Fool's day here, but they call it Liar's Day and they tell lies to each other.
My "Today there is a test!" prank didn't go over so well, because they said it was a bad liw... so I just gave them some examples of practical jokes instead!

It worked for me. Told em there was a test, and they dutifully pulled out their pencil cases and got all quiet. No complaints at al
