Of course I feel bad for the victims and their families, but I see taxi drivers in the same position as us. Most drivers are professional and supporting families. These few that have committed these horrible crimes make the others get painted with the same brush. Just like a minority of foreigners who give ESL teachers a bad name.
Anyway, the police did some good work on catching the driver with just a partial license number |

I agree with you. A lot of my female friends feel uncomfortable riding in taxis by themselves. It's understandable, but I've had a number of them text me things like, "He keeps asking me questions, what should I do? I don't feel safe." Most of the taxi drivers I've spoken with, in both Korea and China, have told me they're struggling to pay the bills and raise a family on the little they make.
it's a bit unsettling that convicted rapists could get jobs as taxi drivers here. I wonder if it's the case in Western countries as well. I mean, how many totally wasted girls take taxis home alone every night? I'm guessing a pretty good number of them. Perhaps a tougher screening process is needed. |

JUST LIKE a minority of foreigners?
Comparing raping murdering serial criminals with foreign ESL teachers doesn't come across well to put it mildly.
The point you attempt to make is understood, but you should choose your words and analogies better. |

yes, it was a bad analogy, I agree. We have not murdered. Can you suggest a better analogy? I would appreciate it |

Maybe a good screening process for taxi drivers would be to only employ those who can pass a safe driving test. On second thoughts no a good idea, then we'd have no taxi drivers in Korea |

Cab drivers have a very good rep back home... I havent heard of a single rape or murder. They are safe and reliable, but also expensive and sometimes hard to find. Most people have a car so the weekends are the only real money-making times... it can take more than an hour to get a taxi on a saturday night!
When i first arrived here, I assumed it was the same way. Then I found out my Korean friends were writing down the number plates of the taxis I would take home after drinking just in case I dissapeared..... Aparently 'taxis are dangerous' and there was more chance of a problem because I was traveling from city to countryside (where there were a lot of places to take me in case of rape or murder). Nice. |
