I'm looking for a gym in Seoul (preferably near Gangnam station) that has the proper equipment for free weight training (i.e. power racks, squat racks, Olympic bars, dumbbells that go up to 100lbs or more, not cramped . . .).

It doesn't have to be fancy. Old school gyms are fine with me.

Any recommendations?

I don't think you're going to get all that for free...

You know, I was thinking the exact same thing...

on a more serious note, not bloody likely, gyms in this country are small and they focus on cardio, hence not really any room for proper freeweight equipment. I joined an ok gym last year (in Goyang) that had a half-way decent squat rack and a tiered rack, but they were perpetually in use so I wasn't always able to use them.

Your best bet might be a gym at one of the universities especially if the school is well known for its athletics (since those athletes need somewhere good to train)

Do you have to associated with the University in some way (i.e. student, instructor, janitor . . .) in order to use the gym there?

You are in luck. Forest Fitness, off exit 7 of Kangnam station, is a proper American-style gym: 3 benches, a squat rack, more than enough weight for anybody I know, and prices are decent. Come out exit 7, walk straight past McDs, ABC, etc. It's the building just before the CGV cinema, with the Turkish dude out front making doner kebabs (or dondurma in the summer), 5th floor. If you join, pm me so that I can badger them for a discount Smile.

How much is Forest Fitness a month? Or is it one of those places that charge everyone a different amount?

Healthbox on the 4th floor of the Recycle City building (old Lumiere Cinema, next to Outback) halfway to Sinnonhyeon Station is 120,000 for 3 months, and is cramped and over-crowded, but has a squat rack which is often free, and plenty of dumbbells.

It's almost that much for just one month at Forest if you go month to month. For three months, you're probably looking at about double the Healthbox price. I think for 6 months you can probably get them down around 300k (and yes, the pricing is elastic). I go often and can't stand overcrowded gyms, so I'd rather pay a little extra to avoid that, but those are pretty awesome prices at Healthbox...

Yeah but 300k for 6 months really isn't that bad. In fact, that makes me want to get a membership there, knowing they have proper lifting equipment. Is it 24 hour? How about crowds?

6 am to midnight; crowding is not a problem, and in any case folks there tend to have good "gym etiquette." The 300k for 6 months is hearsay, but as a ballpark figure I think it's about right.
