What Amazon should do is become a publisher.

Cut out the middle man. Setup your own publishing company. Give authors a bigger cut of the sales, and Amazon can keep the rest. They can print books on demand. Google came out with a printing machine that will print/bind a book in a matter of hours. If someone orders a hardcopy of a book from one of their own publishers, they can print the books and ship them on demand. No inventory costs.

Bookstores would just simply order books in bulk directly from Amazon instead of going through a publishing/printing company. Authorized book sellers can receive additional discounts so the brick and mortar book stores can take a higher margin.

Mmm, I mean, setting up a publishing company really isn't that easy; I used to work for one. I mean, I guess Amazon could do it but it's one more hassle. Publishing requires editing, artwork, post-production, etc. Google making a printer is nice and all, but it's just that, a printer.

If you think editing isn't important, read a Stephen King book, namely the last Dark Tower book...the guy needs someone to shut him up sometimes.

Wow! Lucky! You got one before even the elite in tech? What was so bad about it? Wow! This is fascinating! PM me, I will pay you to tell me about it. Seriously! Lucky! If you don't like it would it be possible for me to buy it off you? Long shot I know! How does 3mil won sound? (I know I'm low balling you ㅋㅋ Very Happy ).

Ah, by extension, I wasn't paying attention. (I was, but I thought you'd be able to figure out what suits you best with the information I provided.)

What you want is an iPhone or iPod Touch.

What I really need is a large ipod touch - oh, wait... isn't that basically this product?

lol

Yes, actually that's quite an accurate assessment of the iPad. It really is an iPod Touch with a much bigger screen. People need to keep in mind that the iPad is a niche product that will serve a select number of people and industries. The big talk in town is that the iPad will help drowning newspapers into the digital era by allowing them to transition. Other print based companies such as Amazon will find new revenue streams in e-books.

I also think the iPad might be a good business accessory especially if it can read Excel, Word, PDF, and PPT documents like the iPhone can. Also, there is the VGA and Composite video adapters so i'll be able to take it to presentations and hook up to projector - won't need to lug around my laptop. Keep in mind that what really makes the iPhone/iTouch powerful is not out of the box functionality, but rather once you've decked it out with apps. 90% of the apps on my iPhone are free, i haven't spent much money on apps mainly games where i want the full version. Since the iPad will be able to run iPhone apps you already have some serious added functionality possible.

I think getting e-pub into the 21st century is only half the story for the Ipad. Wanna know what the real market is? Old people. Seriously. Baby Boomers--the same market that ate up the Wii because someone finally made a video game system where you could just *do* things instead of memorizing arcane button techniques, etc.

The ipad, might, MIGHT snatch up that same market that's constantly bugging you about how to burn CDs, why their itrawebz isn't working, how to resize or flip pictures, how to...GOD, I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it. I'm on the edge of getting an Ipad for my mom. She's just started using email and stuff and this might be really useful for her.

I'm getting one because I'm not mega-impressed with the Kindle or the Nook and buying magazines from What the Book has getting steadily more ridiculous (even though it's not their fault...the exchange rate just blows right now. 16,000 Won for Adbusters? Yeah, way to fight the capitalist regime there guys).

Have you seen what Wired is doing with the iPad. This suggests that it's not the iPad itself limiting the user experience but that no one has really programmed anything savvy enough yet.

I'm going through Myeongdong today so I'll ask. It's gonna be pretty bad though, the U.S. orders are backlogged until April 11th.

RIGHT! This is why I *do* feel good about the Ipad; like, if you pay $450 for a Kindle, in 2 years you've still just got a kindle. The ipad is going to have apps that no one really thought of in 2 years. Even a first gen Ipod Touch doesn't resemble what it did at release because of the OS improvements.

[quote="Adam Carolla"]Will give my own perspective on these:

I'm sure it's display is fantastic. The main caveat is that, if it's the same as the iPhone/Touch, you will need to convert videos to a format iTunes likes. This is a giant pain in the ass.

Why? Quicktime does it very easily.

Get (I think it's called) Air Video. I think PKang posted a thread about it. It is literally amazing. It streams video to your iphone/itouch/ipad from your main PC. It's flawless and if your movie is a format that the i doesn't support, it will convert it on the fly. It's amazing. I think you can stream over 3G as well.

I don't use it much, because my laptop is too underpowered to make it worthwhile. It uses all the system resources so I can't actually do anything while it is streaming, which kind of defeats the purpose, when I can just watch the movie on the laptop itself. I only have a weak ass first gen atom.

Ipad reviews are coming here. This guy looked at it from 2 viewpoints, one from a tech guy, and one for the average joe.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/01/technology/personaltech/01pogue.html

Brings me to an interesting point. Techies are not going to enjoy the Ipad. There are just too many limitations and/or alternatives.

The average joe will think its a great device.

My favorite quote from the article:

Quote:
techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. Its not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, its infinitely more convenient for consuming it books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on

So are they coming to Korea or do I have to ask my parents to ship one? If you of you buys/gets one here first, I'd love to see one.

Mr. Kang? Are you getting one?

I talked to the "Apple" store guys in Myeongdong...no word in when it'll get in, but it usually takes 3 weeks for Korea to get shipments...and then you'll have to deal with import costs and the exchange rate. Best thing to do is have your parents REMOVE it from it's box, pack it nicely, then send it over. That way, at the most, you just get fined by customs which is only a remote possibility since it's not in a brand new box.

Also, I'm not going to grad school anymore so I don't think I'll be getting one unless I get some unexpected bonus cash. Sad

P.s.

I believe that it will be a long time until Korea gets an iPad. The last time I used the iPad emulator, there was no Korean keyboard. I think we can assume that until there is a Korean keyboard, the iPad won't be coming here. Of course, it was about a month ago that I used the emulator. A Korean keyboard could have been implemented since then.

I don't believe the Ipod Touch's had Korean keyboard when they were released.

I was one of the first people to buy a touch, and I seem to remember the Korean Keyboard didn't get added until like a month or 2 later with an update.

I don't understand why the iPad doesn't have a Korean keyboard though. It's almost as if Steve Jobs just removed it from the iPhone OS to spite Korea (and given Steve Jobs, this is entirely possible) because it was so difficult to receive permission sell the iPhone here.
