Itaewon Residents Rejoice with New Alcohol Regulations
From: Jangnan News Service | Apr. 01, 2010
By: Dunbar Killin
Councillors in Seoul's Itaewon district yesterday voted unanimously in support of an ordinance that limits alcohol sales in the foreigner district after 10 p.m. and completely turns off the tap after 12 a.m.
Itaewon residents have been complaining for years about noise pollution and unseemly behaviour including public drunkenness and bar brawls in the sometimes infamous region, which is frequented by foreigners, including English teachers and American military officers.
Park Jun-Ho, a resident of the neighbourhood for the past thirty-seven years said, "It's very noisy all the time. The streets are filled with hoodlums and the remnants of their night on the so-called 'Hooker Hill.'"
Itaewon business owners reacted angrily to the verdict, claiming that the new regulations would hamper sales and provoke closure of businesses.
To this, Park responded that he would be "happy to see a change of pace in the Itaewon district, with more of a Disneyland feel rather than that of a mixture of brothel and disco."
The Itaewon Residents Association to which Park belongs has also discussed the cancellation of a business license for Taco Bell, which, according to Park, they feel would not promote eating great, even late.
Foreigners were asked at random about the new regulations, but most of them were too drunk to give coherent responses.
One man, who identified himself only by the brand of jeans he was wearing said, "It's awefulsome. I spend more than half my paycheque in Itaewon and now I'll have to spend less than that at my local Family Mart."
Local bar owners will meet today not a minute past noon to protest the government's decision with a peaceful candlelight vigil outside of that place where you can get good shwarma.

Retarded. They are talking about canceling the opening of Taco Bell and putting an end to the beer party. This is obviously anti-foreigner policy brought on by some doofus that just got into a local office there. OK, close it at midnight, but canceling it is a bit extreme. While Itaewon is downright seedy, I find most parts of Korean cities to be the same, but simply not foreigner oriented like Itaewon. Stinky, polluted, and over crowded with chain smoking drunks seeking adultry is common place every where every night. I seriously doubt if I will be staying in Korea for a long time as it's not a pleasant place to be honest about it. They embrace worldly materialism to extremes, but not the people it represents such as us. For example, you will see Eiffel tower thingy's all over Korea, but I seriously doubt if the Koreans would enjoy having the French people in Korea. The only circumstance foreigners would be appreciated and wanted is if Korea were poor and we came to spend our money. We may be here and under appreciated, but their developing foreign knowledge to advance Korea is the idea; not a real cultural exchange. They simply do not want what comes with having live foreigners.
Maybe they will be happier with their robot teachers and a pull out of US forces?

Umm, look at the news agency that published the story. Then look it up (Jangnan) in a Kor-Eng dictionary. |
