Hey,

I've been known to have high blood pressure sometimes, but not always. I know one of the medical checks they do when people arrive to Korea is Blood Pressure. Has anyone been kicked out of the country for high blood pressure??? Or had high blood pressure on the medical check and it was fine?

Or has anyone lost their visa for any other medical check related issues? I worry I'll go through all of this and then suddenly they'll find a way to kick me out of the country and I'll lose my job because of high blood pressure and being overweight. Any ideas?

I think you will be sweet. As long as you aren't HIV positive or have drugs in your system, you should be fine.

There's no way to tell whether your blood pressure is too high or too low unless you trend it over time. That's what you tell the doctor when he goes "Oh, you have fatty liver" "Oh, blood pressure too high" ... You say "Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it."

Mine was high when I went and they ended up taking it 3 times. They told me to relax. In the end I saw the doctor and all I could say was "look I'm under a lot of stress, I've just got off a plane, I don't even know where I am (I was taken to a medical clinic on the forth floor, in some town 30 minutes away from where I live at 9am on a Saturday) and .... I'm sure you get the story.
Medical check was done and dusted very soon after that and passed.

Don't fret about blood pressure, I mean it is serious but it won't stop you getting a pass on the medical check.

Second to stomach cancer, high blood pressure is the second biggest killer here. You even meet people hwo are relatively thin and don't drink who have High blood pressure. One of the reasons for this is the high amount of sodium in the diet.

I once got a score of 180/90 on an annual Medical exam. I was advised to take medication and given a thumbs up for an E-2 Visa. High blood pressure is nothing to take lightly. There's a good reason why it's called
"The Silent Killer". You're going to have to lose weight and modify your lifestyle. That doesn't mean you can't have fun. You just need to find a heathier and more active lifestyle. For me instead of going out for Samgyup sal all the time I sometimes go out for Hoe( Korean Sashimi).

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys.

Also, be advised that hospitals might cost you a manwon, but develop a relationship with your local clinic. Getting a nurse to take your vitals once every two weeks, followed by a short conversation with a doctor, costs about 2500 won. You're just not going to be able to do this back home. Not only that, if you get seasonal allergies, he can hit you with the hard stuff like corticosteroids.

There's no link between saturated fats and heart disease or high blood pressure. There is only a weak link between moderate exercise and heart health. Conversely, there is a lot of evidence that heavy exercise (think marathon runners) is detrimental to heart health.

The single best thing you can do for your health is cut processed foods from your diet. eg bread, rice, french fries, wheat, corn etc. Basically anything that a cave man wouldn't recognize as food.

Official Response from Koran Immigration:

English:
As the number of native foreign language instructors has increased in Korea, the number of foreign instructors who have used illicit drugs has also increased. So, we have decided to strengthen our visa requirements by making all E-2 visa applicants submit their medical examination results when apply for visa so that we can create a safe learning environment for our students.

In principle, anyone who has used illicit drugs or who is infected with a government-designated communicable disease must not be granted a confirmation of visa issuance. Also, for those who have been given “denied or pending” status as their medical examination results demonstrate that they are not eligible to teach as the instructors, we will contact their employers and request the applicants to leave Korea voluntarily.

Nevertheless, those who can be treated and who are allowed to teach can continue to stay in Korea as long as a government-designated hospital confirms that their presence will not be a public health risk. This means that we will not block a foreigner just because he/she has high-blood pressure.

The hoe's that have a 'fishy taste/smell' sometimes have diseases. Be careful.

I have high blood pressure, but it is completely under control using meds. However, I lost jobs because I mentioned it on a job application. They informed me that I couldn't work for EPIK because of my "high blood pressure." Not only does that not make sense, but my blood pressure is perfect. The health test would clearly show that.

Three points to consider:

First, never expect logic from Koreans (especially concerning anything to do with foreigners).

Second, do not volunteer any personal nformation to anyone at your school (even the recruiter). Keep all personal information close to your chest. The more they know about you the more information they have to use against you. Do you have a Korean girlfriend? No. Do you have high blood pressure? No. Have you been to Itaewon? No.

Third point. Get yourself on some High blood pressure meds. Hypertension can be easily controlled, and it will lengthen your life expectancy. Oh, and it will help you pass the health test. Failing the blood pressure test will get you denied a visa.
