I came to Korea in 1995 to visit my family when my father was passing away. I've only met them once, and at the time they spoke no English. It was practically impossible to keep in touch with them. Now I am living in Korea and would love it if I could find them while I am here.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have a Family Census registry, an old address from 1995, and a family picture.

The info you have should be enough to find them. The area they lived in should be there and, by going to the "dong samuso", you should be able to get a current address. If anything has their citizenship numbers on it, it can also be helpful. Years ago, police stations used to help people find their families using their computer database; I'm not sure if that is still the case.

Did you try a last known address and they weren't there now?

Hire a Korean PI. For a couple 100k won he could find your family in a day or so.

Ah thank you all! I will definitely look into a PI, but if I could save the cash and do it myself that would be much more rewarding and ... economical.

Could you explain what a "dong samuso" is, and where I might find one?

I did a little checking and it looks like the office (Siheung 2 dong Citizen's Center) you might like to try and call would be 02-896-6141 (~6144). The "dong jang" (dong leader) is listed as Hwang Seok-bong (his e-mail is [email protected]). It would at least be a good place to start. It's possible that someone on this board lives near that area and might be able to personally check for you. If that info doesn't help, we can try some of the other info you posted. I hope it helps.

I apologize for not replying! I am having difficulty finding my old posts. I did not even realize that anyone had responded to that because I could not find it again! Is there an easy way to find all the posts you have made?

I just arrived in Korea one month ago so I have still been trying to settle down before I actually go to find them. I want to be ready. My Korean is non-existent so I will definitely need to bring a friend with me. Luckily, I have met many fluent Koreans who have become good friends and I am sure they will help me if I ask.

It's odd because when I remember visiting Korea in 1995 they lived in a huge apartment complex somewhere in Seoul? That was where my aunt lived at least. Maybe my grandmother still lived in this building? She will be 76 now if she is still doing well. I bet she would flip out to see me. I'll see where this takes me.

I'll definitely look into http://www.goal.or.kr/ as well. That was given in the last post I made.
